Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1The Theories of Listening Learning
The theory of listening will be introduced in detail in the following parts, involving thestatus of listening learning and the multimedia in the listening learning. The propose of thischapter is to stress that it is impossible for the students and teachers to choose an appropriatemethodology in web-based autonomous listening learning under the circumstances having noclear idea about the overall concept of the history of the multimedia and theories that are usedin listening learning. Generally speaking, every language is a tool for communication. In our daily life,Language is an important instrument to express meaning and to exchange ideas which ispeculiar to mankind. It’s a special kind of social phenomenon which is a system made up ofpronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. So, in this sense, we could consider that any languagemust exist in the form with voice. We usually begin with “listening” to learn and master alanguage, because the listener must understand others’ words before he or she wants to speakout or respond. Therefore, as a tool and an important means of communication, voice is the firstof all sound system.

2.2 The Theories of Autonomous Learning
In order to get a better understanding of the theoretical background and current status ofAutonomous learning research, this chapter reviews the background information related to theresearch topic which includes the theoretical support and related studies of autonomouslearning. The definition of autonomous learning originated in the development of life-long learningskills and the development of independent thinkers both of which originated in the 1960s.Holec (1981) had defined autonomy as “the ability to take charge of one’s own learning”. Thismeans that he or she must know how to make decisions concerning all aspects of learning,including determining the objectives, defining progressions, selecting techniques used, andevaluating what has been acquired (This process may be conceptualized as teaching “learners tolearn”). There must be a learning structure in which the learner can exercise control over thelearning. This means that course structure must be designed to allow learners to exercise his orher ability to take charge. Holec has been a major influence in the debate about autonomy inlanguage. Learning and his initial definition of autonomy has been taken as a starting point inmuch subsequent work in the area.
