1.2 Significance of the Paper
Causal connectives are those connectives that express logical relation of cause and effect,playing a fundamental role in argumentative writings. Since the central task for ChineseEnglish majors in producing extended English writing is the production of utterances whichenable the reader to create a coherent representation of the writing, a successfulargumentative writing greatly depends on whether the writer can appropriately use causalconnectives to express the causal relation between the argumentation and the argumentsclearly. As argumentation writing is the most frequently-written writings for Chinese Englishmajors, the study of causal connectives certainly has significant practical meaning for boththe teaching and learning of English.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 The Definition and Classifications of Causal Connectives
The definition of connectives is first introduced in this part, and then the classifications ofcausal connectives made by different linguists and researchers are stated. Next, the causalconnectives and their classification in the present study are provided.

2.1.1 Definition of Causal Connectives
Many different terms for connectives could be found in the existing literature, such as“linking adverbials, linking words, conjuncts, connectives or discourse markers” (Altenberg27). This paper adopts the term “connective” for the sake of consistency and convenience.From the formation of the term “causal connectives”, it is quite clear that it is a kind ofconnectives. As Byrne have pointed out, connectives are “words or phrases which indicatemeaning relationship between or within sentences” (18). According to semantic meaning,connective can be classified into many kinds, and causal connective is one kind of connectiveto express causal relations between sentences or clauses.
