Conclusion


Causal connective contributes a lot to the clarity and comprehensibility of English writings.However, it is problematic for language learners, particularly for EFL learners, to use causalconnectives properly. The present study is a micro research of causal connectives used byChinese English majors in comparison with native English speakers based on two corpora:DWCCEM and NWC. With the assistance of statistical tools like AntConc3.2.1w andLog-likelihood calculator, the overall frequency, the different range, the positions andpatterns of causal connectives in DWCCEM and NWC are quantified and compared. Themajor findings of the study are summarized as follows:
Firstly, both Chinese English majors and the native English speakers use a large number ofcausal connectives in their writings, but the standardized frequency of causal connectives incorpus of Chinese English majors is much higher than that of native English speakers. Therange of causal connectives used by Chinese English majors is much lower than that bynative speakers. Chinese English majors only focus on some of the causal connective like“so”, “so that”, “because”. Some of the causal connectives are obviously underused or evendo not appear in their writings.
Secondly, both Chinese English majors and the native English speakers have an obviouspreference in using causal conjuncts and causal adverbs, and both of them rarely useprepositional phrases to express cause and effect.
Thirdly, in light of the overall frequency, Chinese English majors use more causalconnectives in English writings with the rise of their grade. As for the different range,Chinese English majors are inclined to use more kinds of causal connectives with theirincreasing knowledge in English at the beginning, while the density of causal connectivesshows the feature of initial increase but subsequent decrease.
Fourth, Chinese English majors tend to put casual adverbs in the initial position in almost allcases and only put a few causal adverbs in media or final position. However, the nativespeakers are inclined to put causal adverbs in medial position under most circumstances. Withregards to patterns of causal adverbs, Chinese English majors only focus on the most familiarpatterns, namely to put casual adverb in the initial position of a sentence and with a commafollowing it, and they seldom use the other kinds of patterns. However, the most frequentlyused pattern by Chinese English majors is the least preferred pattern used by the nativeEnglish speakers.
