摘要:Thus the thesiscompares the frequencies of the collocates of each node word among its positiveprosody, negative prosody and neutral/mixed prosody between the two corpora todistinguish the difference between Chinese English learners and native speakers.

n must reflect theserelationships, for instance, by asking questions, giving orders, making offers orexpressing speaker's attitudes. To some extent, DAs usually play a role ofpotentialization; specifically, DAs could express the speaker's attitude and thoughtexactly or an article could be vivid by using DAs correctly.


1.2 Significance of the Thesis
The research of semantic prosody is still in preliminary period and it was firstintroduced to China by Ji Yuhua and Wu Jianping in 2000. Following their steps, manyresearchers have written other dissertations to study on semantic prosody from boththeoretical and practical aspects (Pan & Feng, 2003; Sun, 2004; Wang & Wang, 2005;Zhang & Liu, 2005; Wei, 2002, 2006) on the basis of authoritative corpus. In thesetheses, most of them tend to research its theoretical frames, research approaches oractual usage of semantic prosody in linguistics. Only a few of them compare thedifferences by using them from the aspect of the lexical item in its semantic prosodybetween Chinese English as foreign language (EFL) learners and native speakers.


Chapter 2 Literature Review


This chapter focuses on the theoretical basis at home and abroad, includingsemantic prosody, collocation, colligation, degree adverbs, so that it can provide a framefor classifying and analyzing data.Sinclair (1996) provides that semantic prosody, collocation and colligation have anascending order of abstraction: collocation is in the lowest level, colligation is moreabstract than collocation, and then semantic prosody is in the highest position. In thefollowing part, their definitions will be introduced one by one. First of all, in this partsemantic prosody will be described.


2.1 Review of Semantic Prosody
Sinclair (1987) describes the linguistic phenomenon that some words can habituallyattract the same or similar semantic feature, e.g. the word happen is often related tounpleasant things. After that, many linguistic researchers have noticed this phenomenon.Thus, a great many of descriptions of semantic prosody have been proposed. In this part,some of which definitions will be provided in this part.


2.1.1 Definitions of Semantic Prosody
Sinclair (1991: 112) states that "Many uses of words and phrases show a tendencyto occur in a certain semantic environment". Sinclair (1996: 86) defines semanticprosody as "the initial choice of semantic prosody is the functional choice which linksmeaning to purpose; all subsequent choices within the word relate back to the prosody".And Sinclair (1996: 87) summarizes that semantic prosody is attitudinal and on thepragmatic aspect of the semantics-pragmatics continuum and he also describes thatwhen a speaker or writer is choosing words to make a sensible meaning, in addition tothe lexical and grammatical principles which govern the grammaticality of the meaning,what he needs to take into consideration will point to the functions as well. Therefore,the definition of Sinclair straightly points out that the research of semantic prosodyshould lay particular emphasis on the pragmatic function.
