Ethiopian education in the past was completely restricted to boys. The children had a hard life, but they were very hard working. They usually lived in great poverty and they had to beg for their daily meal. When they leave home and their family, they take a sack with grain in it, this will keep them from going hungry and from begging for several months. The children, in many cases, were a little more than a servant to their master. They sit outside and under a big tree for shade. The students learn by repeating what the teacher says. Then when they have finished learning about their religion, reading and writing they become teachers of their faith themselves. Knowledge was mainly passed orally instead of in written form. Books were very hard to get and were generally copied by hand.

Nowadays, nearly everyone goes to normal primary and secondary schools where we learn using text books and other resources. We also sit in classrooms with chairs and tables. This is another change in the Ethiopian tradition. Barely anyone knows how to speak in Ge’ez (which is the church language). We also don’t go around begging for food. Our guardians make sure we get everything that is necessary to have a good education.

`Globalisation can be a shock to some cultures. The Hamer tribe is a tribe located in the fertile land of the OMO River Valley. The Hamer people are primarily pastoralists, tending cattle, around which their society bases their existence. In addition, the Hamer people are famous for their “bull jumping ceremony” in which young men are required to jump over a line of bulls in order to be accepted as adult members of Hamer society. One interesting part of the ceremony is the whipping of the female relatives of the individual undergoing the bull-jumping test. The Hamer women are whipped on their bare backs, resulting in open wounds and later scars. The hamer tribe is also known for their traditional everyday clothing. Which is a covering for the bottom part of the body: made from animal hide. Now these people really don’t have an idea about the outside world, but they are now wearing t-shirts and other types of western fashion. I know this might not be the best thing to do but the uniqueness of this tradition is something that in my opinion should not be driven into extinction just because other people don’t think it’s good or necessary. I know this will bring on a lot of debate or it might already have.

Globalization is not only affecting Ethiopia! (Of course not, it wouldn’t be called globalization if it was). Globalization has touched all the corners of the world. The greater influences are countries with big economies. For example: United States of America, Countries in Europe, China and Japan. I mean think about the things you own. If you bought it from England it doesn’t necessarily mean it was made there. It probably was produced by an American company in China. The raw material might have come from Africa.
