This is of significance as it allows individuals to become familiarized with the practical problems that they may encounter in the workplace. As a result, if this is not present then it takes time to acquire the skills needed on the job while they lack the theoretical concepts of the field (Dafou, 2009).


The business functional skills focuses on being able to solve problems as it relates to the technology and being able to provide an appropriate technical solution to be employed (Tesch, Braun, and Crable 2008). In addition, Tesch, Braun, and Crable 2008 found that amongst other studies teamwork and the ability to rationalize were also important skills to have. Finally, business tasks knowledge is a key essential skill as it focuses on the completion of a given task and attaining business knowledge. Even so, researchers have often times used technology skills and technical skills interchangeably as both take in to consideration being able to use computer components (Lerouge, Newton, , & Blanton, ,2005). Nonetheless, this skill continues to be a necessity in any workplace but it is in short supply (Handel, 2003).


In determining the various skills required it is quite evident that employers take a high decree as it relates to technical skills. Also, from studies conducted it was concluded that technical skills are vital for any IT personnel. However, Cappel stated that soft skills are considered of more importance than technical skills in the area of IT professionals which contradicts the previous statement that technical skills are of more importance. Additionally, Friedman agreed that entry level professionals should have skills such as interpersonal, communications, team skills, critical thinking skills and technology skills. Also, researchers have been led to believe that non technical skills may be more significance than specific technical skills required by any IT professional (Banerjee, S., & Lin, W. 2006). At the end of the longitudinal study, it was evident that technology competencies remained to be an essential requirement for entry level positions and remains an important aspect in the workplace (North, A., & Worth, W. 2004).


Additionally, other researchers have found the following to be essential IT professional skills. Interpersonal skills are those that focus on the individual and involves the ability to interact with others especially in terms of information system projects. Going even further, this type of skill takes into consideration behaviors and attitudes (Lerouge, C., Newton, S., & Blanton, J. 2005). Once again, this type of skill is also in short supply (handel)


Researchersfurther discussed that interpersonal skills have been ranked as one of the most important requirements for an entry level IS professional. These individuals also go on to explain interpersonal skills as including teamwork, communication skills, critical thinking skills, personal motivation and creative thinking (Tesch, Braun, and Crable 2008). In another research article this same type of skill was also established to be a type of skill which employers looked for.
