Nevertheless, despite the fact that the technical skills required for entry level IT professionals may vary, general skills and personality traits are found to be similar in almost every research conducted (Gabric). These personality traits can include being conscientious, motivated and ethical (Gabric). Even so, along with the general skills employers also take into consideration personality characteristic. These traits can include being ethical, responsible and flexible for entry level positions (Gabric).


In the end researchers studying skills required for entry level IT professionals often times used jobs ads in an effort to identify the skills necessary (Lee). In a study conducted using job ads it was found that basic skills were least frequently mentioned in entry level ads even though it remains an essential part of the workplace. On the other hand, ads considered technology skills, but from the study it was the interpersonal competencies that were most frequently mentioned and indicated that there is an increased interest in interpersonal competencies (North, A., & Worth, W. 2004). Nevertheless, in the past researchers have often debated whether or not an IS professional should have technical, business, or both skills, while others have taken into consideration the importance of interpersonal and soft skills (Abudl). Nonetheless, educators have arrived at a conclusion that a combination of people, technical and business skills are vital in order to ensure the success of any IT career (Mahatankoon).


However, Banerjee, S., & Lin, W. (2006) asserted that the graduate students of IS should be well rounded and diverse in many areas when taking on entry level jobs. The author further indicates that these individuals should be familiar with development techniques as well as software tools. Though, these skills required speak to those individuals in entry level position as system analysts. A systems analyst is a job perceived to be the most common amongst a number of graduates who may hold educational requirements such as MIS degrees (Banerjee, S., & Lin, W. 2006). Also, an employer who hires an entry level employee in the information systems department already has an expectation about the skills and knowledge areas that individuals applying should have. As a result, it is through research that these entry level skills required by employers become known (Tesch, Braun, and Crable 2008). Likewise, Hunsinger, D., & Smith, M. (2008) also stated that vocational education is also vital. These voluntary certifications required in the IT field are important means in which job applicants are able to determine the skills these individuals have. Also, the write reiterated that there is a complexity in determining these skill sets.
