Content theory of motivation mostly deals with the internal factors of an individual that forces him or compels him to act or move towards his satisfaction. The following theories are included in content theory of motivation
Maslows hierarchy of needs
Alderfer's ERG theory
Herzbergs motivator-hygiene theory or two-factor model
McClelland's learned needs theory
Maslows hierarchy of needs
One of the best motivational theories presented in 1942 is by maslow. It consists of five levels of needs which are queued up in a hierarchal manner with the most basic need emerging first and the most complex or sophisticated one appearing last. As the lower level needs are satisfied the higher level needs become activated or operative. The satisfied need do not play a role as a motivator but the need that has not been satisfied is the actual motivator
Maslows hierarchy of needs consists of five levels which are a follows:
Level 1 - physiological needs
Physiological needs are those needs which are most basic human needs which includes food, water, shelter and comfort etc. Any organization fulfils these needs by providing its employees with financial help or reward (pay).
Level 2 ? safety needs
Safety needs include a desire for safety, security and stability from any thing harmful and the organization can fulfil these needs by providing different health and security benefits to its employees.
Level 3 ? social needs
The social needs in maslows hierarchy represents the need for friendship and belonging, the organization can be very helpful in fulfilling these needs by organising different parties. These needs can also be fulfil if the manager or supervisor show direct concern or respect to its subordinate employees.
Level 4 ? esteem needs
The esteem needs of maslows hierarchy is directly related or linked to the principle of performance appraisal because these needs include the desire for self respect and recognition.
