English learners will have a better understanding of other countries’ cultures by the research.
and it is clipped from “telescope”. It picks up the later letters “scope” and clips the former letters “tele”. It is a new scientific word made by cutting a part off the original and using what remains instead.
Acronyms belong to shortening and they are commonly used in science English neologisms. Acronyms develop fast because more and more science English neologisms appear and they can shorten the length of the article in order to adapt to the rapid rhythm of science. Furthermore, this kind of formation is simple and clear, so it is very popular in science English neologism. “Rom” is science English neologism and is shortened by “read only memory”. It picks up the initial letters “R”, “O” and “M” and forms the science English neologism “ROM”. It pronounces together. In the past, people pronounced acronymy letter by letter and now more and more science English neologism and the name of organization and products are pronounced as a word. For example, the transliteration of Chinese “艾滋病” is from acronyms “AIDS”(Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome); dinky(dual income, no kids+y) and laser(lightwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation).
4.2.2 Derivation/Affixation
“Affixation is the formation of words by adding word-forming or derivational affixes to roots. This process is also known as derivation. The words created in this way are called derivatives.”(张维友, 2004: 70)
Derivatives are constituted by morphemes (affixation and root) and meaning is also produced by morphemes. The quantity of science English neologism is large, but the quantity of morphemes is finite.
The affixation of science English neologism is very diversified and affixation becomes the important means of the word-building of science English neologism, for example, the prefix "anti-" in “antismog” and “antipollution”. The suffix"-logy" is an active one in recent years, which means some kind of subjects such as anthropology. The affixation reflects the development of modern science and technology and the advantage of the use of affixation is obvious. Affixation has great flexibility and owns wide and strong expressions and ability of match. There are two reasons: on one hand, the basic meaning of affixation is stable and concrete; on the other hand, the coherence of affixation is very strong. When it coheres before or after the root, the meaning and concept can be immediately flashed into the mind. Furthermore, the affixation of Latin morphemes are abundant and a large number of new morphemes are produced and used as the means of word-building of science English neologism due to the development of science and technology, like bio-, -mania.
4.2.3 Compounding
After World War Ⅱ, compounding developed fast, especial noun compounding. Compounding is used widely and it is the most productive formation in science English. The meaning of compounding is exact, economic and convenient and it can convey the meaning in the simple way. Therefore, compounding is used frequently and it is productive. Compounding can simplify the complex phrases or subordinate clause into a lexeme of compounding. For example, local group means a group of relatively close galactic systems.
In the process of English development, the compounding has positive influence and complements English neologism, especially science English neologism. T
