2.1 Previous Studies of Reported Speech
Reported speech means using language to refer another speech in one speech and it is a kind of phenomenon that occurs in nearly all styles including spoken and written discourses, newspaper articles, fiction, and academic writing. In news reports, reporters use reported speech to tell readers what someone said and tend to apply reported speech to illustrate their reports are objective and impartial. Overseas scholars like Volosinov, Leech and Short, Halliday, Baynham, Thompson and Ye as well as domestic linguists, such as, Xin Bin, Tang Qinye and Shi Wenxia are famous professors in this field. Volosinov is regarded as a forerunner who studies reported speech in the relationship between human mind and ideology. In 1973, Volosinov published a book named Marxism and the

Their classifications are widely used in the field of discourse analysis and provide the reporters a wide range of choices to report news events.

He concluded that linguistic code contains world-view or ideologies so they cannot reflect reality objectively. Moreover, he also announced that different fact can be shaped by different linguistic styles. He (1991) regarded news reports as social procedure and reporters make painstaking choices from pertinent words which exist in particular background of society, culture and
