contrastive analysis of reported speech on the attack of  Urumqi  based  on  these  reports  selected  from  Chinese  and  Western  media  from  the perspective of critical discourse analysis. So the most important purpose of the present study is to reveal the same and different ideologies, values and viewpoints hidden in language, to find the reasons of the same and diverse ideologies formed, and to improve readers’ critical language  awareness  and  help  people  to  avoid  the  control  of  ideology  which  represents  the standpoints and attitudes of dominant power.  As  for  the  significance,  this  research  has  the  great  value  on  theoretical  and  social practical  aspects  as  follows:  firstly,  this  research  illustrates  the  effective  and  interpretative power  of  CDA  combining  with  Fairclough’s  model  as  theoretical  basis  for  uncovering ideologies  hidden  in  various  new  discourses,  including  violence-related  news  discourses which  are  less  analyzed  by  linguists.  The  news  materials  about  Urumqi’s  explosions  are relatively  new  linguistic  data,  which  enrich  the  analytical  materials  and  data  of  CDA. Secondly, its significance is to analyze if this event is correctly or mistakenly understood and interpreted by Western media since their reports reflect the Chinese image in westerners’ eyes or  even  in  international  people’s  eyes.  If  this  violence  is  not  reported  properly  by  Western countries, it will have a terrible influence on Chinese unity and harmony or even influence the relationship between China and the world. Therefore, it has a significant political meaning in contrastive analysis about this event, which is useful for international readers to understand the real conditions of China and help China to establish good relations with other countries. Furthermore,  it  can  train  the  critical  reading  abilities  of  the  readers,  avoid  the  power manipulation of dominated groups, eliminate the influence of ideologies of ruling class and further  form  their  own  attitudes,  stances  and  judgments  through  the  effectively  study  of various  news  discourses.  Additionally,  the  teachers  can  cultivate  the  critical  awareness  and capabilities of the students through selecting various public discourses as teaching materials in reading class.

2   Literature Review

This chapter briefly introduces previous studies of reported speech and news discourse. In section 2.1, the author provides a brief review over the previous study on reported speech abroad and at home and then briefly introduces three aspects of reported speech.
