ors examined or introduced methods, such as the Human Resource Management approach (Cuskelly,Taylor, Hoye and Darcy, 2006) and the constructive feedback approach (Garner & Garner, 2010) as ways to improve volunteer satisfaction and retention. Finally, Farmer and Fedor (1999), and Luping (2011) introduced methods, such as the Psychological Contract Perspective that ensure volunteers are feeling valued and appreciated for their time.
By analyzing the published data collected in the Current Population Survey's volunteer supplement of 2007 through 2011, selected responses from Developing the Volunteer Motivation Inventory to Assess the Underlying Motivational Drives of Volunteers in Western Australia and selected responses from the 2012 Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois Volunteer Survey, this study was able to broadly examine the current volunteer atmosphere in the United States and in Western Australia. However, using this secondary data had its limitations of only representing the individuals who answered the survey questions, and it might not represent the population in Central Illinois. Also, a sample of the population might differ from the entire population results. In order to increase the validity and reliability of the findings, similar data needs to be collected in the Central Illinois area.
Volunteer Recruitment 志愿者招募
The data analysis for volunteer recruitment found that a higher percentage of volunteers from 2007 to 2012 were recruited by someone asking them to participate. Furthermore, they were mostly asked by someone within the organization. However, approaching the organization about volunteer opportunities came in second. Analysis for this section also showed that the greatest percentage of volunteers spend their time among religious organizations and educational/youth services. This indicates that it is important to create volunteer recruitment methods that stress the need to ask people for assistance. This data also suggests that the type of work and mission of an organization is considered when people are looking for a place to volunteer. Volunteer managers should always keep this in mind when recruiting potential volunteers. To avoid turnover down the road, the recruiters should make sure that the individuals they recruit have a vested interest in the organizations' values and mission. Finally, this data also tells us that organizations need to invest in one person who will be responsible for the recruitment of volunteers. If the majority of volunteers became involved because someone asked them, then organizations need that person out in the community asking for volunteer assistance. However, it would be interesting to see if the same applied to residents of Central Illinois.
Professionals who work with volunteers in the Central Illinois area agreed with these findings. Kelly Thompson and Jeremy Carrell have spent a number of years managing volunteers in the Central Illinois area, so they are familiar with the volunteering population in the area. Both Thompson and Carrell feel it is important for organizations to have a staff member dedicated to volunteer management if the organizations want volunteers to be recruited and retained. They also agreed that individuals should be recruited by finding the right person for the right job. It is important to find someone who agrees with the mission and has an interest in the well-being of the organization.
