People, andnations interact and communicate increasely with each other day by day, the massiveinformation which is useful for people must carry on the transmission through newsmedia. As a result, people can get a great variety of news from newspapers,magazines, broadcasts, TV or the Internet every day. English, as a kind of worldlanguage and through taking the news as a carrier, has become one performance wayof modern English, namely, news English.News English, which is adequate for reportages such as publications, broadcastsand televisions, is a kind of common practical variety in modern English. It is alwaysinfluenced by journalism, communication theories, sociology, political science,economics and so on, therefore, it has many research values, particularly in newsEnglish lexicon.Language is society’s language, it changes along with the social developmentand the time. The lexicon, as the most basic ideographic unit in English language, isthe most active part in the language changing process. The rich cultural content borneby the lexicon can cause the reportages to be more real credibly, vivid and attractivefor the readers.
Because of the reportages’ accuracy, simplicity and clarity, as well as thecompetition relationship between news media, news writers also must produceunceasingly the lexical features of their own organizations in the usual work practiceTherefore, it is no doubted that the studies on news English lexicon can help notonly the readers but the writers know and grasp the language features of newsEnglish.Many former researchers always focused their researches on the empirical summaries, on the contrary, this thesis attempts to use an emerging linguisticsresearch methodology, corpus-based linguistics research method, to analyze thelexical features of news English. The corpus-based research method is one of mostimportant methodologies in corpus linguistics field, which emerged in Europe andAmerica in the mid-20th century.Gui Shichun (2009) once pointed out that with the rapid development ofcomputer science, corpus linguistics has become a discipline, one of which aregrowing dramatically.The methodology of corpus linguistics can be divided into three categories:corpus-informed approach, corpus-based approach and corpus-driven approach.Corpus-based approach does not attempt to overthrow traditional linguistics theories.Based on the probability, people take massive real language use examples as theobject of study to seek for the rules of language use. With the aid of statistics, thisapproach helps people obtain objective and reliable data, confirm or revise the formerlanguage theories. As a result of the superiority of quantitative analysis combiningwith qualitative analysis in the corpus-based approach, more and more researchersbecome interested in this kind of approach.
