2. Purpose and Significance of the Study
This thesis aims at making a tentative and systematic study on E-C translation of newsunder the guidance of Nida's FE theory. The author wants to prove that FE theory is feasibleand applicable to serve as the guiding theory for E-C translation of news. Due to the poorresearch on E-C translation of news from the perspective of FE theory, the author makes afurther research in this field. With concrete examples taken from Bilingual News on ChinaDaily website, FE theory is confirmed to be feasible to serve as the guiding theory for E-Ctranslation of news. The author makes a detailed analysis of the features of English news aswell as the translation principles, which lay the groundwork for E-C translation of news.Specific translation methods for E-C translation of news under the guidance of FE theory arealso given out in this thesis. The author hopes that this thesis can make a little contribution tothe research and practice on English news translation in China.
The author believes that this thesis is of significance and practical value. Chapter One Theoretical Framework

All translation practices need systematic and appropriate guiding theories as their strongand effective backups and this research is no exception. In this part, the author first expoundsthe formation, notions and development of Nida's FE theory, which is the guiding theory inthis thesis. And then the author reviews the theoretical contributions of Nida, or rather, thenotions of this theory.

1.1 Formation and Development of  Nida's FE Theory
FE is a variant of the comparable effect. The British translation theorist Tylter firstproposes the comparable theory. He holds that a good translation should be able to make thesame effect in different language societies as that in the original one. The German translationtheorist Kaul calls it comparable effect (same effect) in the book Art of Translation. Theconcept of fiinctional adequacy in translating has been described in a number of books andarticles as “dynamic equivalence" (DE). It was first put forward in Toward a Science ofTranslation (1964) and elaborated in the Theory and Practice Translation (1969) in greatdetail.
