tive and effective in practical translation, especially for E-C translation of news.Compared with other translation theories, FE theory has its unique advantages: In thefirst place, it regards the target readers as the most important element. In the second place, itstresses a dynamic relationship between the readers and the message in both SL text and TLtext. In the third place, it aims at producing the closest and natural equivalence. All thepositive elements mentioned above help ensure the application of FE theory to E-C translationof news. This is one of the major findings of this thesis. Moreover, this thesis introducesChina Daily and China Daily website in detail. English learners will find that China Dailywebsite is a good choice to improve their English, especially the Bilingual News in theEnglish study section of Language Tips. That is because an authentic audio is attached alongwith each piece of bilingual news. It is so convenient that English learners can read the newswhile listening to the authentic audio. In addition, the author makes a thorough and systematicanalysis about the features of English news. The author also finds that proper translationmethods and translation techniques should be adopted for achieving the maximal level offunctional equivalence between the SL text and the TL text. Translation methods andtechniques for E-C translation of news under the guidance of FE theory are listed clearly fromfour perspectives, namely the lexical level, the syntactic level, the rhetoric level and thediscourse level. All the above findings contribute to the research of news translation.
However, this research also has some disadvantages due to the limitations of FE theory. In FE theory, Nida lays emphasizes on "reader's response". That is to say, the TL readersshould respond to the translated version in substantially the same way as the readers to theoriginal. However, it is rather difficult to determine the two responses. There are even lots ofdifficulties to decide the readerships of both the original text and the translated version. Thatis because different readers from the same culture react rather differently in reading the sametext. And it is impossible for people from different cultures to produce same or similarresponses to the same text, let alone to different texts, namely the original and the translation.(Wang Zhijiang, 2007: 125). There are many more factors which make it difficult to measureand compare readers' responses. What's more, the author cannot do this research in athorough and comprehensive manner, due to personal ability and time requirement.Although FE theory has some limitations and disadvantages, the significance ofequivalence in translation can never be denied. It is quite obvious that equivalence is a central concept in translation theory (Chesterman, 1989: 99). In this case, there is no doubt thatequivalence is of great significance for both translation theory and practice.Although equivalence is every translator's aim, we should keep it in mind that equivalence isalways relative, due to the cognitive differences between different languages and cultureswhich make the absolute equivalence impossible. “Although it can be obtained to some extent, equivalence is influenced by a variety of linguistic and cultural factors and is therefore alwaysrelative" (Baker, 1992: 6). Translators need to be aware that "translation involves far morethan replacement of lexical and grammatical item
