Cultural misreading in English news reports occur from time to time. Sometimes, itwould promote the progress of cross-cultural communication. However, most of thetime, the unconscious misreading will lead to the failure of communication. It may alsocause severe conflicts, which affect the publicity of positive national images. Forinstance, English news reports once liked to use the word "propaganda" instead of"publicity" no matter how positive the events were. As we know, "propaganda" isnegative in meaning. It would mislead readers, leaving a negative impression on Chinato foreign readers. Therefore, it is important for people to write and read news from across-cultural perspective. Only when news reports are written and edited on across-cultural basis, would English news reports become an objective medium ofsuccessful cross-cultural communication.

Chapter TwoLiterature Review

Although cultural misreading has existed for a long time, people did not begin tostudy the phenomenon in language until the linguistic turn of philosophy. Culturalmisreading was once only used to explain the misunderstanding of literature. With theboom of comparative culture, cultural misreading has drawn more attention ofresearchers at home and abroad. It is now widely studied in translation andcross-cultural communication. This chapter reviews previous studies on culturalmisreading mainly from literature, translation, journalism and the cross-culturalperspective. It concludes that the study of cultural misreading in English news reports isa comer left by researchers and scholars. It also points out the necessity of the studybased on the theories of cross-cultural communication.

2.1 Literary Studies on Cultural Misreading
A great many studies on cultural misreading focused on literature. In his book AMap of Misreading, Harold Bloom first proposed the term "misreading", pointing out"Reading... is a belated and all-but-impossible act, and if strong is always amisreading" (1975: 4). He held that there are no texts but relationships between texts,which depend on misreading. Many scholars have adopted similar ideas to interpretliterary works. Yuan (2002) suggested that the inequality between nations and the lackof psychological preparation in different cultures lead to the tragedy of the characters aswell as the conflicts in plots in A Passage to India, And Wu (2005) stated that when AStreetcar Named Desire came to China, the reviews and performances foregroundedChinese cultural factors, which affected from character analysis to artistic exploration.Misreading should attribute to many factors. According to the theory of linguistics,cultural misreading in literature interpretation results from the conflict of discoursepower. Different interpretations reflect different principles adopted by readers and readers or that of authors is more powerful than the other cultures, it would take overthe controlling position and shape the others (Zou, 2008). In other words, the conceptsof the more powerful cultures tend to be represented in the interpretations.Not all misreading of literature is negative.
