2.2 Lexicographic Studies on Chinese Numeral Idioms 
Because  Chinese  numeral  idioms  are  native  to  Chinese  and  full  of  cultural connotations,  foreign  scholars  have  done  little  research  on  this  field  and  Chinese scholars have done much lexicographic researches on idioms. For idioms are relatively frozen  expressions  whose  meanings  do  not  reflect  the  meaning  of  their  components (Benson,  1985).  Idiom  has  long  been  a  hot  topic  studied  by  scholars  at  home  and abroad.  The  foreign  scholars  did  studies  on  idioms  from  translation,  linguistics  and theoretical  foundation.  The  earliest  one  of  lexicographic  studies  on  idioms  is  Cowie′ study  of  the  treatment  of  collocations  and  idioms  in  learners'  dictionaries  in  1981. Dobrovol'skij  (2000)  stated  that  semantic  analysis  was  a  necessary  prerequisite  for finding  functionally  adequate  equivalents  and  hence  for  improving  bilingual dictionaries  of  idioms.  By  taking  relevant  combinatorial  properties  of  idioms  into account,  it  was  possible  to  replace  traditional  near-parallels,  presented  by  all  known dictionaries  of  idioms,  with  cross-linguistic  equivalents  which  can  be  used  in  the corresponding  texts.  In  2006,  he  wrote  Idiom  Dictionary  which  discussed  theoretical foundations of classifying phrases and singling out idioms as the central class. Esther (2005)  studied  the  close  relationship  between  lack  of  dictionary  information  and  the typical  errors  inexperienced  translators  made  and  then  developed  a  proposal  for  a better lexicographic treatment of business idioms from the point of view of translation.
