(2)Culture Learning through BusinessContext

Culture learning can be improved throughintroducing the business context.Business Englishborrows ideas from management training.In discussing the role of management inBusiness English,different viewstoward managem-ent should be emphasized.Students are encouragedto find materials about the role of management indifferent countries before the class.Then,throughthe discussion of the materials they find,they mighthave the following conclusion.Dominantmanagerial values in the United States include"achievement and success,belief in hard work,pragmatism,optimism,Putitanism,rationality,impersonality in interpersonalwork relationship,equality of oppor-tunity,acceptance ofcompetition,and individua-lism"[2](p.180)

But inGermang,the manager is not a hero.In fact,Germans do not have a very strong concept ofmanagement.Culture learning can also be improved throughdiscussing the specific business practices such asappointment seeking,greeting behavior,gift giving,negotiation and strategies in negotiation as well asthe language itself.Culture learning can be improved throughdiscussing the differences in negotiations and thestrategies involved in different cultures.Theawareness of the differences in negotiations causedby cultures is as important as the language used.Innegotiations with many cultures,a"yes"actuallymeans"no".In some cultures,personalrelationships take priority over the product orservice,and therefore business does not begin untilfriendships are established.

(3)Culture Learning through the Learningof Idioms and Proverbs

Culture learning can be improved through thelearning of idioms and proverbs in BusinessEnglish.From learning these idioms and proverbs,the awareness of culture differences can beincreased.history of English speaking countries isintroduced through the learning of phrases as"raincats and dogs",and"an Indian summer"etc....Benjamin Franklin reminded the independentnature of the individual when he wrote that"Godhelps those who help themselves."People areencouraged to"speak up"and make sure their views are heard inthe United States because"The squeakly wheel getsthe grease."The saying,"One does not make thewind but is blown by it,"found in many Asiancultures,suggests the people are guided by faterather than by their own devices.

(4)Culture Learning in Test

Culture learning can be realized throughfinding the mistakes in culture that students mighthave in the test of background knowledge oflanguage and communicative ability in BusinessEnglish.The test goes like this--finding out theappropriate answer to each question according tothe understanding of culture and English language.For example:

You're a guest in an American friend's home.Your friend asks if you would like something todrink.You really would like a drink.What wouldyou do?

A)Say,"Yes,please."

B)Say,"No,thank you."and wait for yourfriend to ask you again.

C)Say,"That's OK.I can get it myself."
