1.2 The Purpose and Significance of the Study研究目的和意义


The study aims to explore the ways on how to cultivate students’ culturalawareness and improve their comprehensive competence of using English, especiallytheir communicative competence, in oral business English teaching. Based on theresults and findings from the two questionnaires and oral English tests, the author willfind out the existing problems and weaknesses in both the students’ learning and theteachers’ teaching of western cultures, then propose some constructive suggestions onhow to improve the current situation and solve the existing problems, which will lay agood foundation for the further cultivation of students’ cultural awareness andimprovement of their English comprehensive competence, especially theircommunicative competence. As long as the students have a full knowledge aboutwestern cultures, they can be more competent in their communication with theirforeign business partners, trying to avoid some misunderstandings and even somejokes, especially when it is concerned with some cultural problems.

1.3 The Organization of the thesis论文结构


Apart from the Chapter One - Introduction and Chapter Six - Conclusion, thethesis is made up of other four chapters. Chapter Two offers a brief literature reviewon the current studies on culture acquisition both at home and abroad and somerelevant theories about culture acquisition, including the definitions andcharacteristics of culture, discussions on acquisition, discussions on cultureacquisition, the Acculturation Model, the relationship between culture and oralEnglish. Chapter Three explains some details of the application of culture acquisitionto oral business English teaching, including the principles, contents and ways ofapplying culture acquisition to oral business English teaching in vocational colleges.In Chapter Four, a survey study is conducted to investigate the current situation of thestudents’ cultural awareness and knowledge about culture acquisition, the teachers’understanding of culture acquisition in oral English teaching and the teachers’ mainmethods on how to cultivate students’ cultural awareness and improve their cultureacquisition ability in oral English teaching. The findings indicate the importance andnecessity of cultivating students’ cultural awareness and enhancing their cultureacquisition ability. And in Chapter Five, some discussions and analyses about theresults are made, from which we can clearly see that: 1) the teaching of the knowledgeabout culture acquisition can enhance the language learners’ communicativeawareness; 2) the application of the intercultural knowledge to oral English teachingcan promote the learners’ comprehensive competence of using English, especiallytheir communicative competence; 3) intercultural communicative activities arebeneficial to the promotion of the learners’ oral ability.
