1.1 Research background
During the past 60 years, China Today, as public material, has achieved greatsuccess in showing the world a real China. It mainly focuses on the achievements andchanges that China has made economically, socially and culturally. To a broader sense,China Today helps establish China a good international image.After entering 21 century, China quickens its pace in reforming. And the trend ofglobalization is underway. This trend brings new challenge to China's translation ofpublicity materials. In order to meet the challenges, China Today made many adjustments.And its effort was paid back. In the "Periodical Exhibition of China" held in November2011, China Today was entitled "Excellent Periodical of China". It boasts a largecirculation around the world. Many researches have been carried out to analysis thesuccess of China Today, And in this thesis, the author is also trying to find the changesthat it has made so as to establish itself a leading publicity periodical.But the author must state here that only changes related with the influence of ideology,poetics and patronage are analyzed. Some changes, such as increasing in financialinvestment, are not included in this thesis. The author hopes that this research mayprovide some suggestions to the development of China's publicity material translation.It must be admitted that translation plays the most important role in making ChinaToday a leading publicity periodical. So in this thesis, the author also gives a systematicalanalysis on the translation of China Today. As a kind of magazine, it is very important toimprove its readability. In order to win more readers, translators must take the targetreaders into serious consideration. It is hard for readers to accept those texts which areagainst their convention or texts which they don't want to know, for instance, bad newsor texts against the religion belief. Therefore, translators must consider the ideology andpoetics of the target culture and choose the right source texts, right translation strategyand make necessary adjustments in the process of translating. Meanwhile, it is impossiblefor any magazine to get rid of the influence and manipulation from patronages. So theauthor argues that the C-E translation of China Today is absolutely under the influence ofideology, poetics and patronage. In this thesis, the author will systematically study howthe three factors influence the C-E translation of China Today, It's hoped that the twoquestions discussed above can be solved through scientific and careful analysis. Answersto these two questions can give us some suggestions on how to improve China'stranslation of publicity material.In this thesis, case study and statistical research are used. In Chapter 4, the authorconducts a statistical research to 2008 and 2009 as well as issue 1,2 and issue 7,10 ofChina Today. It is hoped that it can help finding the changes happening to China andsome characteristics of China Today's selection of source text.
