individual has a family name and a given name (placed in thatorder), as well as a “courtesy name” used for polite address, a “literary name” used toexpress a desired attribute, and a “style” used as a kind of formal nickname. In TheDelights of Roaming Afar, for instance, Shen Fu mentions, “a fellow-student whose familyname was Ku; his courtesy name was Chin-chien, his literary name was Hung-kan, and hisstyle was Tzu-hsia.” Although the enumeration of each person’s various names can be asource of confusion at times, a patient reader will come to appreciate the eccentricities ofboth Chinese culture and Shen Fu’s literary style.Woven throughout the text is the romance between Shen Fu and his beloved Chen Yun,a woman who was both his cousin and his wife by arranged marriage. The first chapter,The Joys of the Wedding Chamber, is devoted entirely to her. Here Shen Fu describes inwhimsical detail, the trifles and idylls of their time together: Yun’s unique charms andmannerisms, their mutual love of poetry, the mystical settings of their rendezvous, theautobiography while actually is a novel aiming to cultivate one’s morality. Incorporatedtalks about the art of living, leisure minds, splendid landscapes, literary comments, andhealth cultivation, etc, it enjoys a clear thread of writing, thus is widely circulated. In the Wedded Bliss6, the author mainly puts the focus on his wife Chen Yun asshowing his sorrow to beauty. Chen Yun is not so beautiful, but she pursues beauty bynature. She takes painting and embroidering as a necessity to composing poem and regardsthe simple life as the ideal situation. Shen Fu treats her like a close friend who can sharewith his hobbies and feelings, but the idea is not recognized by the orthodox society, whichonly remains as the author’s yearning for beauty. The Little Pleasures of Life7gives avivid description of the leisure time activities of Shen Fu: his joys of his childhood, hisadult life cultivating flowers, and the experiences of composing poems with other scholars. He tends to be close to nature in childhood and takes delight in nature. While in adulthood,he has very little time to focus on nature, and is often chained to worldly possessions. Many of the episodes are involved with discussions of aesthetic experiences, which arereally worthy of careful thinking. In Sorrow8, Shen Fu points out that most of his lifefrustrations are out of his uprightness and his commitment to words. Though this chapteropens with the author’s own sorrow, most of it actually deals with the bumpy life of ChenYun which is also due to her characters. The content is full of the author’s endless love forhis wife and resentment to the unfair fate. The Joys of Travel not only portrays beautifulscenic spots the author had visited but also records anecdotes, local customs and historicalallusions. Different from others, the author holds the belief that what counts is the gainingof experience rather than having a rough view and following what others said.Yang Yin, Wang Tao’s brother-in-law, found the incomplete version of the work. Hegave the four parts to Wang Tao, who was in charge of Shen Bao10at that time
