　张爱玲是一个在中国现代文学作品的史上最杰出的女作家，总是受到公众的欢迎。应该强调的是，张爱玲在二十世纪中国文学史上是少有的翻译以及双语作家。　Eileen Chang (also Zhang Ailing, 1920-1995) is one of the most outstandingfemale writers in the history of modern Chinese literature and her literary works havealways been well received by the public.https://www.51lunwen.org/translation/   What should be emphasized is that EileenChang was one of the few skillful translators as well as bilingual writers in the 20thcentury Chinese literature.There has been a lasting interest in Eileen Chang's literary works worldwide.The research and criticism about Eileen Chang and her literary works have never beeninterrupted from home and abroad for half a century. Her representative works TheGolden Cangue has been highly praised by a lot of famous scholars, including therenowned translator, literary critic Fu Lei, and the famous Chinese American scholar,Columbia University professor, Hsia Chih-tsing (also C. T. Hsia). In recent years,with some of her novels being adapted into films and TV series and herautobiographic novel Little Reunion published, another ‘‘Chang Fever” has arisen inChina's mainland. What should be pointed out is that Eileen Chang is also a translator,whose translation includes not only inter-lingual but also intra-lingual translation andself-translation. She is also the first to translate Hemingway's monumental novel TheOld Man and the Sea into Chinese.Researches have been done on Eileen Chang and her literary writings fromdifferent perspectives. According to the record of CNKI from 1980 to 2011, amongthe 3，699 theses and journal articles on “Eileen Chang”，only 29 are about “EileenChang's translation".From what I have mentioned above，it is obvious that there has been little studyon Eileen Chang's translation works and translation thoughts so far. The Chinesesimplified version of Eileen Chang's translation works The Old Man and the Sea waspublished in China's mainland in March, 2012. Thus this thesis intends to study EileenChang's translation thoughts based on her Chinese translation of The Old Man and theSea, in an effort to draw due attention to Eileen Chang's translation works andtranslation thoughts. Just as the chief editor of The Complete Works of Eileen Changand book collector Zhi An said, “Eileen Chang wouldn't be complete in the reader'seyes without her identity as a translator.” Similarly, the translation history of Chinawould not be complete without including Eileen Chang as a translator.

　　The thesis aims to achieve the following two objectives: a. to make a relativelydeep and systematic probe into Eileen Chang's translation thoughts based on herChinese translation of The Old Man and the Sea in five aspects as follows; selectionof the source text for translation, considerations to readers, translation strategies,qualifications of the translator and the reproduction of the original style in translation;b. to arouse people's interest in studying Eileen Chang's translation works andtranslation thoughts.
