Inthe past few decades，numerous studies have been carried out by the scholars in westerncountries，and most of them have studied translation theories and practiced systematically andprofoundly，and published a great many works, but in China the studies on E-C translation inthe framework of relevance theory are very limited. Furthermore, in the previous research?many scholars applied relevance theory to the literary translation, yet few of them related it tothe translation of news English. In addition, the effect of relevance and translation is rarelymentioned. Therefore, the application of relevance theory to English-Chinese news translationwill be further studied. In recent years，some scholars have begun to study translation fromdifferent perspectives, such as linguistics, semiotics, culture, sociology, and psychology, etc.，thus the research of translation has been developed into a new depth and width.
As a branch of linguistics，pragmatics is developing rapidly. It has practical value anddynamic characteristics. From the point of view, pragmatics can be naturally connected withtranslation. Relevance theory mainly involves communication and cognition. It advocates thatcommunication is an ostensive-inferential process concerning communicative andinformational intention. Translation，which involves a process of dual ostensive-inferentialbetween languages, is a kind of communication. In this process, the comprehension of source text and the choice of codes in target language will be controlled by the principle of relevance.To some extent，relevance theory could be used to explain the translation practice. In the wayof combining social，cultural, and cognitive factors，the study will find the complexity andspecialty of translation phenomenon with translation strategies.The purpose of this thesis is to enhance our understanding of relevance theory in Englishnews translation and to stimulate further research about the practical usage and acquisition ofrelevance theory. Studies on English news translation from relevance perspective will increaseour understanding of their roles or features, as well as their cognitive and pragmatic propertiesin communication, providing an increasing interest and attention in this area. Additionally, thestudy will help us explore the English news translation strategies under the direction ofrelevance theory, so as to solve the practical problems of English news translation.

2 Literature Review

This chapter presents the review of relevant previous studies, which includes acomprehensive review of the studies on relevance theory，relevance translation theory andnews translation.

2.1 Studies on Relevance Theory in China and Abroad
Relevance theory was first proposed by British linguist Deirdre Wilson and Frenchlinguist and philosopher Dan. Sperber in their published book named Relevance:Communication and Cognition in 1986. According to Jiang Wangqi (Jiang Wangqi，2003)，"Relevance theory has experienced three stages in its development: grown-up stage, maturestage and amended stage.” It was first put forward in 1979，and then published a book namedRelevance: Communication and Cognition in 1986, and later amended the second edition oftheir book in 1995. During the two decades，relevance theory has aroused great interest of thelinguistic and pragmatic field in the west.
