Fusang, namely The Lost Daughter of Happiness has beenfavored by the American readers and hit The Los Angles Times Bestseller list in thesame year. In 2002, thanks to its strong market performance, the book was released inpaperback version and was also followed by a success. As Will Schwalbe, the founderof Hyperion East, also the then editor of The Lost Daughter of Happiness put it:“…Yan Geling's books have been very successful, selling nicely not just here, butaround the world…And Yan Geling's The Lost Daughter of Happiness sold inparticularly large numbers under license abroad, especially in England and France. And did very well here. ”2The market performance of The Lost Daughter of Happiness is particularlyimpressive if we take the American readers’ suspicion of translated work into account.“Americans are not that into translated books. They are always somewhat dubioustowards translation. Besides, they are also reluctant to learn a foreign language, sothey just read books from British and American authors.” (美国人不怎么看着翻译的东西,他们对翻译总是有些怀疑,而美国人又懒得学外文,所以就只看英美的作品。) [葛浩文、季进,2009: 50] According to Schwalbe, only “a fraction of one percent of the bookspublished in the US are in translation.”.3The figure for translated Chinese literatureis even more meager, and the few books published are mostly cold-shouldered by themarket. For instance, talking about Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out 《(生死疲劳》)by Mo Yan, Goldblatt admitted that it would be nice if it sold one or two thousand.[葛浩文、季进,51] Thus, as a Los Angles Times bestseller, the market performance ofThe Lost Daughter of Happiness is indeed quite extraordinary. Negative Influence of Cultural Filtering on the Reception ofFusangDespite its evident contribution to the smooth reading experience and marketsuccess, the adoption of cultural filtering also resulted in the inscrutability of the mainmeans simple. Though commendatory, this statement does no justice to Yan Gelingwho is celebrated for her exquisite language. The comments from ordinary readers also voice the same impression. Forinstance, one reader on Goodreads summarizes that “The style was, above all, detached and bland…It made the book feel more like a droning narrative.”9Andanother from Amazon draws our attention to the “sparseness of the author’s prose”,which is definitely very unfair to Yan. Others also criticize it as “factual” and“unemotional”, varying greatly from the lyrical and lively characteristic of Yan’soriginal text.Through the examination of reception, we can see that language filtering, causedeither by language barriers or by translator and editor’s intentional manipulation, hasdeprived western readers of the chance to appreciate the language talent of Yan, andleaves them an impression of language sparseness and impassiveness. And as thebook reads so smoothly, most readers will forget they are reading a book oftranslation, and will ascribe all their dissatisfaction with the language to the authorwithout differentiation, which is rather unjust.
4.2 Reflections on the Translation of Fusang《扶桑》的翻译研究
Up to now, a meticulous examination of the translation and reception of Fusanghas been carried out through the perspective of cultural filtering. And should it stophere, the whole study will be of no avail and cannot take us any further than where wealready are. This paper aims not only to study superficially and separately how onesingle book is translated and received, but more importantl本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
