2.2 Analysis of the Text
The culture of Qiang people is a wonderful flower among multi-ethnic cultures ofChina, playing an indispensable role in construction of the bright Chinese culture. Thetext Oral Literature of Qiang People, which is totally 10107 characters, is divided intothree parts. There are five stories related to Yu the Great in the first part, and in thesecond part and the third part nine stories are included, each covering a different aspectof the customs and worships of Qiang, each featuring briefness and plain in acomprehensible way, which are easy to understand for primary school students andmiddle school students. Various aspects in Qiang people’s life involving history,customs, festivals, costumes and worships have been on full display to elaborate itsdevelopment and change through years.Strong ethnic colors are expressed in the whole text by description and narration,therefore correct understandings would be keys to accurate and fluent translation. Thereare a lot of short paralleling sentences as well as expressions referred to names ofpeople and places, giving readers remarkable national characteristics and intensivehistorical senses, paying enough attention to the popularization and promotion of thesplendid Qiang culture. Some of the specific words and culture images, taking variousgods in Qiang people’s life as an example, are totally unique and unfamiliar to targetreaders. Such peculiar information is likely to cause cultural losses in the targetlanguage so the target readers may lose some information or may become puzzled.Accordingly, the translator must make effort to compensate for such losses of culturalelements.
