Chapter One Introduction

People in different countries have their own cultures and languages, which differfrom one another. When people who share the same culture and speak the samelanguage communicate with each other, they tend to omit their shared backgroundinformation. This kind of omission can help people in the same culture communicatewith each other efficiently. However, it will be a big barrier for those from a differentculture. Different grammar systems and language characteristics will bring aboutdifferent translation losses. Taking Chinese-English translation as an example, the lossof information, meanings, pragmatic functions and aesthetic forms and so on during thetranslation process is inevitable. As language and culture are interdependent andinteractive, cultural differences are also obvious in the translation process.Due to the differences between the source language and the target language, thenecessity of compensation for losses in cross-cultural translation has become reasonable.The author made a general study of translation compensation strategies and with thehelp of the strategies examples of grammatical compensation and cultural compensationare separately given to solve problems encountered in ethnic literature translation. Thisthesis aims to make a study on Chinese-English translation on Oral Literature of QiangPeople under the guidance of translation compensation strategies. This thesis will havea specific explanation on how translation compensation strategies are applied incompensating losses in the translation work. By analyzing the target language text, it isseen that with the influence of translation compensation strategies a series of problemsare solved to a certain extent. After the study on the oral literature translation related toQiang culture, the author wishes that translation compensation strategies andcorresponding skills, which can be Referenced by more translators, would be a moreeffective way in solving problems of the same kind in ethnic literature translation. Thethesis topic chosen by the author intends to draw more attentions of scholars who areinterested in ethnic literature translations, at the same time sharing new views andmaking new breakthroughs for this kind of texts.

Chapter Two Pre-translation Preparation

2.1 Background of the Project
In 2008, the Wenchuan Earthquake brought devastating losses to the people inQiang regions, and it was then that the inheritance of Qiang oral literature gave rise toattentions from all respects, meanwhile, the protection and development of Qiangculture have become an urgent issue. Since we followed the policy of reform andopening up, China’s economic and social culture has been rapidly developed, and theprotection and inheritance of Qiang culture are just around the corner. The spread anddevelopment of Qiang culture not only will respond to the challenges brought byglobalization, but also give a continuation of the conventions and wisdom of our nativeculture.The source text of the translation project mainly talks about oral literary stories ofQiang people, including the legend of Yu the Great and stories related to the customsand worships of Qiang. National culture is the precious lifeblood of a country. To finishbuilding a moderately prosperous society in all respects and to realize the greatrejuvenation of the Chinese nation we must promote the construction of the socialistculture.
