Chapter IVAN ANALYSISOF WANG WEI’SPOEMSFROMTHE PERSPECTIVEOF SEMIOTICS

In the last chapter, the thesis talks about the key figures of Semiotics and elaboratesits enlightenment on translation. In this chapter, the thesis will turn its attention to thepractical research and case study of translation of Wang Wei’s poems in theframework of Semiotics. This chapter aims to make a comparative study betweenWang Wei’s poems and its English version, and try to summarize the translationstrategies and translation methods adopted in the process of poetry translation underthe guidance of semiotic meaning theory. Before this, data collected for the research,including the questionnaire and the corpus of Wang Wei’s poems as well as itsEnglish versions translated by Wang Baotong and Xu Yuanchong, is to be analyzed.

4.1 Data Collection

This thesis will conduct a qualitative study through collecting representativeexamples from Wang Wei’s poetry and its English version, with a combination ofcomparative analysis, exemplification and case study, aiming to explore thetranslation strategies and translation methods in translation of Wang Wei’s poetry.The author did a quantitative research with questionnaires to see people’s attitudetowards Wang Wei’s poems, combined with systematically analyzing Wang Wei’spoems translated by two Chinese translators, Wang Baotong and Xu Yuanchong.
