stranslations of classical Chinese poetry. Paying little attention to the characteristicswhich result in beauty in sense and sound because of differences between the twolanguages, Watson tries to represent meanings of the original works by interpretivemethod. He prefers to reproduce the cultural imagery which abounds in Chinese flavorso that the "indestructible" portion of Chinese culture can be transmitted. Generallyspeaking, Watson likes to transform the rhythm into blank verse or free verse. Heapparently tends to foreignize Chu Ci.The author of this thesis holds that a version cannot be evaluated as a good one ora bad one from the perspective of the translation strategies adopted by a translator. There may be some generally agreed principles, but any absolute single standardsshould be avoided for the English translation of classical Chinese poetry or for theevaluation of such translations. When translations of the same work by differenttranslators are approached, their strategies adopted should be combined with thetranslators' subjectivity, namely, the culture attitude, motivation of translation andaesthetic inclination, etc. of the translator. As long as the translator has achieved his/herpurpose and as long as the translation has been appreciated by the intended readers, thetranslation should be appraised as a successful one.The application of translators' subjectivity to the study of English translation ofChu Ci has fundamentally changed the fixed model of appraisal of the translationversion in traditional translation studies, which seeks to distinguish the good versionsfrom the inferior ones. Instead, we should view translation in a broad and open mindand acknowledge the great role translation plays in the construction of culture. However, the application of translators' subjectivity also has its limits. Some scholars doubt thatwhen providing a new perspective for us,it may bring unreasonable aspects as well. Therefore,it must be pointed out that to emphasize the translators' subjectivity does notmean that the translator can translate in whatever way they want, although initiative andaesthetic creativeness is the major characteristics of the translators' subjectivity. Theexertion of the subjectivity of the translator shall be constrained by the understanding ofthe source text and target readership. The author hopes this thesis can help the traditional Chinese literary translation, poetry translation in particular, promote to a further step. In consequence, morequalified translation works might be produced to make the world aware of the essenceof Chinese culture and literature by appreciating the beauty of classical Chinese poetrylike Chu CLIt is a great challenge to the author to deal with the English translation of Chu Ci,although the thesis only focuses on two translators' versions. Obviously, it is beyond hercapacity to conduct a more in-depth and comprehensive study of it. The result of herstudy is still tentative, and the difficulty of the topic really calls for the masters oftranslation studies. So far, the analysis in this thesis is far from being thorough andcomplete; it has not covered all the aspects of the translation and the examples listed foranalysis are not enough due to limit of space. Besides, the study of the translator'ssubjectivity is a relatively big topic for research in translation and one thesis such asthis one cannot touch upon all the aspects. Both the study of Chu Ci and the study of thetranslator's sub
