It covers almost all aspects of ancientmilitary theory such as the rule of war, strategy, politics, economy, astronomy,geography and meteorology. Besides, the thoughts illustrated in this book shed a lightnot only on wars but also on many other social and economic activities in whichdecision-making is involved.Famous for the strategies and philosophical thought, the book has exerted aglobal influence on the modern world. It has been translated into over twenty-sevenlanguages, and currently, there are more than forty English versions of Sun tzu: TheArt of War. Due to the constant effort by generations of translators, a variety of qualitytranslations are available to the world. Among the quality translations, Griffth’sversion has been accepted in the Chinese Translation Series of the United NationsEducational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). And Minford, as aworld-known literary translator, entertains men of letters with his literary translationof the masterpiece on art of wars. His translation is recognized as one of the besttranslations in recent years.How are those translations evaluated? This is a matter oftranslation criticism.For decades, translation study, especially translation criticism has centered on ST.It was not until 1970s when Skopostheorie was proposed by Hans. Vermeer that TTwas given enough attention. There is no doubt that both ST and TT are involved intranslation. Thus, it is reasonable to try to work out a comprehensive framework ofevaluation in which TT is as important as ST. Skopostheorie, which focuses on thecommunicative function of TT, comes as a solution. According to Skopostheorie, thestandard in evaluating a translation is the adequacy rule which is materialized by thetranslation brief. It refers to principles laid down by the initiator of a translation action.It is natural to draw the conclusion that if a translation conforms to its translation brief,it is an adequate translation, and thus a valid translation.https://www.51lunwen.org/yyfy/org201211102142058881.html To conform to the translationbrief the translator has to observe the three Skopostheorie rules, namely, the Skoposrule, the coherent rule and the fidelity rule. Under the Skopos rule, text style isexamined in detail. Under the coherent rule, thematic structure and cohesive ties arethe language focus and under the fidelity rule, the effect of ways of translation ofculture-loaded words (foreignization and domestication) is explored.
