nce between coherence and cohesion before discussing the importance of coherence irtranslation. According to numerous researchers in linguistics, we can simply make aconclusion that coherence takes under its umbrella all cohesive relations inside and outsidediscourse, so it can be viewed as the catch-all conception of these multilevel relationnetworks. Coherence contains not only the cohesion within the discourse but also bridge thegap between a single text and the macro social environment where it is set.It is well-known that an awareness of cohesion and coherence being a key factor of an>successful written work is a very important skill for writers to develop. Surely it is difficult toseparate the two, but in the writing process we can distinguish that cohesion can be thoughtof as describing all the grammatical and lexical links that link one part of a text to anotherThis includes use of synonyms, lexical sets, pronouns, verb tense, time references, grammatical reference, etc. For example, 'it', ‘neither’,and ‘this’ all refer to an ideapreviously mentioned; ‘first of all,,‘then’ and 'after that' help to sequence a text; 'however',‘in addition,,and ‘for instance’ link ideas and arguments in a text. Then what coherencemeans is that it can be viewed as how meanings and sequences of ideas relate to each other.Typical examples would be general/particular, statement/example, problem/solution,question/answer, claim/counter-claim. In other words, cohesion is a means of establishingconnections within a text at all sorts of different level and coherence is a way of making sensekindred and team work spirit. This book not only opens a door to the mysterious wolf spiritbut also provides us a tool for interpreting Chinese history. Having released 3,000,000 copiesin China, this book has been on the top 10 best-selling book list for six consecutive years. This novel's English version has been completed by a famous American translator, HowardGoldblatt and has been granted Man Asian Literary Prize in 2007. After his translation of thisnovel going popular in other countries in Asian, Europe and American, many people began tofocus on the research on wolves. The major newspapers and magazines all over the worldpaid comments on this novel and conducted the author's exclusive interviews, such as NewYork Times and Times in America, The Times and The Guardian in England, Der Spiegel inGerman, Asahi Shimbun in Japan, etc.As a sinologist, Howard Goldblatt has a profound appreciation of Chinese Cultures, and thus he knows the book is not simply a picture depicting the battle between the prairiewolves and people on the Mongolian Steppe. More importantly, it presents the balancecontrol concept deeply established in Chinese traditional culture and the destiny of a nationunder the circumstances of rapid socio cultural change. How he successfully dealt with thecomplicated coherent relations intersecting in the original novel and reconstructed in the wayboth acceptable to the target readers and the author is worth studying. The translated versionis not following the word to word corresponding principle,
https://www.51lunwen.org/yyfy/org201211161325345059.htmlas it is clearly shown in thetranslation through deletion of many narrative descriptions and adding the translator's ownannotation. What principle did the translator follow by? How does the translator interpret theoriginal coherent relations? How much do the deletion and adding
notes contribute to thereconstruction of original coherent relations? This paper will
