f Lu Xun'sworks. All the data in the paper are collected from related works and articles published inrecent years.According to Newmark's translation theory, the research is developed by analyzing thefigures of speech at length with the examples from Lu Xun's works to find out the differencesbetween Chinese and English figures of speech and the guiding principle of Newmark'stranslation theory to the C-E translation of those figures. Then it will turn out that mostChinese figures can be translated into English perfectly, and Newmark's theory can be used inC-E translation in most cases.The paper will analyze Chinese figures of speech from three levels: phonology,vocabulary, and syntax. The paper is inspired by and derived from the following questions;L As integral part of oral speech and writing language，what are differences betweenChinese and English figures of speech?2, How does a translator solve the problems in the process of translating figures ofspeech in literature when those figures are related to culture?3. Can Newmark's translation theory be used to analyze and guide all the translating ofChinese figures of speech into English?4. Can Newmark's translation theory work when there are culture-special elements in aChinese figure of speech?

 

1.3 Outline of the thesis论文结构
The thesis falls into five chapters.Chapter one introduces the concept of important terms related to figures of speech, theresearch background, research objectives and significances, rationale of the research and thedata and material employed in the research. This chapter presents the whole structure, theauthor's train of though, the summary of content in every part, and the problems expected tosolve.Chapter two reviews the study on figures of speech, Lu Xun's works, and Newmark'stranslation theory abroad and at home at resent years. The review of those studies brings thelatest and previous results about the topics and gives the research a feasible model. From thereview, one can know what methods have been taken in those researches, what conclusionsthey have gotten, what the limitations are，what problems are still not resolved, and whetherthese problems are worth studying further or not.Chapter three introduces the detailed information about figures of speech, thedevelopment and main content of Newmark's translation theory，and the irreplaceableposition of Lu Xun's works in Chinese literature world.Chapter four exists as the most important part in this thesis. Based on the theories andbasic information in Chapter three, this chapter conducts the analysis of figures of speech atlength with the cases in Lu Xun's works as examples and discusses the translation of Chinesefigures with Newmark's translation theory. The analysis follows the level of the linguisticdescription respectively from the level of phonetic rhetoric, lexical rhetoric, and syntacticalrhetoric. Through a detailed analysis of differences between the Chinese and English figuresof speech with the examples from Lu Xun's works, according to Newmark's theory, thestrategies and methods which the translator adopts in translating in order to be equal andcorresponding can be seen clearly.Chapter five gives a conclusion that the Chinese figures of speech can be translated intoEnglish perfectly under the guidance of Newmark's translation theory, and puts forward thatNewmark's theory has instructional significance for Chinese works in most situations.
