Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research
For the past centuries, many scholars have paid their attention to the studies ofmetaphor. Since Aristotle, consistent efforts have been made to the studies of metaphor.Aristotle regarded metaphor as a rhetorical ornamentation or stylistic device, and hisview dominated the studies of metaphor in the past 2000 years, and it had been limitedto metaphorical expressions.With the development of metaphor studies, studies of metaphor have transformedfrom the traditional concept of viewing metaphor as a mere rhetoric device to thecurrent various approaches to metaphor such as interaction approach, cognitiveapproach, and pragmatic-cognitive approach. The studies of metaphor had entered acompletely new interdisciplinary stage in the 20thcentury, and scholars had conducteda systematic study on metaphor from different aspects.Metaphor translation in general varieties has attracted many scholars’ attention,but little effort is made to deal with the translation of metaphors in English news. Andbecause of different language systems, the translation of metaphors in English news isrestricted from the linguistic perspectives.

1.2 Significance of the Research
With the further development of modernization, news has become more and moreimportant in our daily lives, and it informs us all kinds of events happening every day,including politics, economics, society, culture and so on. We can find metaphor iswidely used in English news when we read it. Although news is usually short andconcise, metaphor can create the atmosphere of vividness and humor successfully.However, owing to the differences in language and culture, metaphor translation setsobstacles for translators. Furthermore, because news is a tool of mass communication,the language of news should include the following aspects: arousing the readers’interest, enlightening the readers, avoiding the conflicts and so on, the translation ofmetaphors in English news is different from the translation of other texts.A study on strategies for translating metaphors in English news has a greatsignificance. First, through the study, we can have a better understanding of the realmeanings behind metaphors and the functions of metaphors in English news. Second,this thesis has put forward some systematic and constructive strategies for translatingmetaphors in English news. Third, this thesis will also help English learners appreciatethe language of English news, efficiently build up their vocabulary, and develop theirEnglish thinking mechanism.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies on Metaphor
The studies of metaphor have a long history in China and abroad. Being consideredas a mere linguistic phenomenon, traditionally metaphor works as a rhetoricalornamentation or stylistic device. However, with the development of research, thestudies of metaphor step into a deep domain. The studies of metaphor can be generallydivided into three stages: the first stage is from Aristotle to the 1930s; the second stageis from 1930s to 1970s; the third stage is from 1970s to the present. Each stage has itsown theories about metaphor.The first stage is the rhetorical studies stage.
