1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Thesis
For most learners, intercultural communication is not a new continent to research anylonger. There is no denying that it is a tendency forfor people to interact with the ones fromdifferent cultural background a long time. And cultural contacts just focused on the commerceon the trade routes at the beginning, while at present intercultural communication has been anintimate part of our culture. The fast course of globalization of the whole world has promptedthe first power on earth-the United States of America to take more notice of interculturalmatter. And in addition, since 1960s while intercultural education has beome an emerging areafor education in most countries and districts of the world, particularly in the U S. There is nodoubt that E T Hall, who is a good example of the excellent learners, as wrote The SilentLanguage and Beyond Culture. And then Hofstede Culture's great works, Cultures andOrganizations, and besides, Larry Samovar and Porter's great book: InterculturalCommunication :A Reader, etc, which boost the speed of fast development of the world.As for China, in August 1995, the government set up China Association for InterculturalCommunication, which has been taken as sort of progress milestone in the process of studyingintercultural communication. The measure gave rise to flourishing progress of interatualcultural commnunation studies. Increasing number of scholars started their interculturalresearches on the basis of the knowledge of world culture. Gradually, owing to the theoriesand knowledge put forward in above works and more intercultural interaction experienced inour everyday life, we realize that there appears more challenges and opportunities in regard tothose intercultural contacts that we will be faced with, which indicates that we could take fulladvantage of intercultural interactions get more information and benerfit from thecommunication. The popular trend forces us to study how to communicate effectively withpersons who are from different culture countries and districts. It is essential that they areaware of the great cultural diversity that exist in the country and have developed skills foradapting to these different settings. The rapid globalization forces us to make great efforts toimprove the ability to communicate with people are from different cultures so that we couldmanage to freely share ideas, information, and feelings.

1. 2 Research Questions
The study collects data from Chinese College non-English majors and it addresses threequestions:
1) What is the current level of Chinese College non-English majors interculturalcommunicative competence and intercultural sensitivity ?
2) In what ways can the non-English majors students improve their interculturalcompetence by increasing intercultural sensitivity ?
3) What are the implications of this survey for the future ESL teaching ?
With the fast development of the global economy, interactions in different culturescontext has become more and more important and frequent all over the world. As a result ofthat, being good at intercultural interaction has become the indispensable capability forforeign language learners.
