In another way, cohesion is aprerequisite for production of coherence. There are many opposing voices againstHalliday & Hasan's view on cohesion and coherence. In Discourse Analysis, Brown& Yule hold that Halliday & Hasan are ambivalent about those non-structural, explicitexpressions between textual components and those components' semantic relations.Brown & Yule (1985) provide many examples to prove that cohesion proposed byHalliday & Hasan can not guarantee coherence and those explicit expressions ofcohesion are not in correspondent with semantic meanings of cohesion.

2.2 Previous Studies on the Application of Cohesion Theory to Translation
Linguistics is a tool to produce semantic meaning. Translation is the process ofreproducing source language's semantic meanings in target language. Modern textlinguistics promotes the development of translation studies. Text linguistic theoriesusually can be applied into translation theories and their practices, The publication ofCohesion in English by Halliday & Hasan draws translation experts' great interest,whose studies immediately switch from sentence syntax to cohesion in source andtarget languages. In 1980, Hartmann put forward the term 'contrastive textology'.Since then, contrastive linguistics studies have been given at the micro and macrolevels: the micro study includes phonology, lexicology, grammar, the macro study isrelated to culture, and psychology, etc.Text is a semantic unit. Cohesion and coherence are two main features of it andcohesion is the main prerequisite to realize coherence. Text is also the basic unit intranslation. Therefore, in the translation practice, based on the textuality, one principleshould be fully implemented: selecting appropriate translation strategy to reproducecohesion and coherence in target language.
