Lawrence has been unceasingly exploring perfect relationship between man and woman all through his lifetime. He intends to regenerate a healthy and lively society in his mind. And as the groundwork of his original contribution to our social thinking, his vital study of gender relationships is naturally conducted in the novels and stories. In a word, Lawrence’s artistic creation can be treated as an unremitting exploration on new sexual relations.

Conclusion 结论

The whole idea of placing Lawrence within an anti-feminism group perhaps needs to be rethought. In the context of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, we can see that the writer is pursuing a male/female balance in sexual relations such as that between Mellors and Connie, in which they are joint partners in a transformative relationship. They save each other through the sex act shared between the two sides, no one dominate the other one，instead，one becomes the part of the other. Therefore, Lawrence is more an explorer than objector in the discussion of relations between sexes. In fact, if we research sexual relations in all his later works through an objective way, we will have to admit as time goes by Lawrence does not become wholeheartedly chauvinistic and he appears to appreciate the feminist consciousness and independent female characters. To carefully consider all of Lawrence’s works would be infinitely better than to study just one of them, but that would require a lifetime of word, somewhat beyond the scope of this paper. So I come to a compromise and choose Lady Chatterley’s Lover, for it is the last work by Lawrence and the most typical one that contains transforming effects of sex.

Here I would like to conclude my discussion with D. H. Lawrence’s words, “There has been so much action in the past, especially sexual action, a wearing repetition over and over, without a corresponding thought, a corresponding realization. Now our business is to realize sex. Today the full conscious realization of sex is even more important than the act itself.”
