e. Thethemes of alienation, exile, and displacement that are central in her works are alsocentral to Caribbean writing as a whole. Though Rhys herself is in-between theEuropean culture and Caribbean culture as her heroine Anna Morgan in the novelVoyage in the Dark and the novel is based on her own love trauma experience, herCaribbean cultural identity is undoubted. Anna is halfway to Antoinette not only inher successful innocence, but in her whole strange, new, subversive point of view.

Through analyzing the dynamic process of the heroine Anna Morgan’s culturalidentity, this thesis has discussed the reconstruction of Anna’s Caribbean Creolecultural identity after her illusory English dream is shattered in the face of cruel socialreality. In Voyage in the Dark, as a daughter of a white former slave-owner and aCreole mother, Anna is born in the island of Dominica that is located in the CaribbeanSea. This thesis has concluded that the post-colonial Caribbean society is racialconflict-filled in the early 20th century, so Anna’s cultural identity has always beenin-between white British imperialist culture and black Caribbean culture. Anna hasboth whiteness and blackness, but she is not accepted by either the white Englishcommunity or the black Caribbean population due to her cultural hybridity. Annaidentifies herself with the culture of the oppressed, while her family history and herwhite skin colour identify her with the oppressors, the slave-owners, and “her racereinforces that identification” (Zhang 207). Therefore, Anna still has illusions aboutbeing recognized by English society due to her inner self-colonization. Though Annatolerates and caters to the prejudice and contempt of the English around her, she isstill rejected by them. Working as a chorus girl, Anna’s difficult survival makes herbecome the rich British gentleman Walter Jeffries’s lover. Anna’s obedience anddependence on the exploitative colonial male Walter fully reflects that Anna degradesherself into a sexual commodity of the British patriarchal society. After beingabandoned by Walter, Anna completely loses her Caribbean Creole cultural identity. This thesis has also concluded that experiencing a series of failures and setbacks,Anna reflects on herself and “associates her personal situation with the history of theCaribs, portraying her sense of an individual past and identity within the context of awider social and cultural past” (Emery 422). Consequently, Anna’s recalling thestrong fighting spirit of the Caribs gives herself the courage to continue to survive.Meanwhile Anna has learned to use words and actions to resist the dualisticimperialist English society that keeps oppressing her. Unfortunately, Anna is pregnantlater. After undergoing an abortion, Anna is caught in illusion due to suffering fromsevere loss of blood. She joins the Caribbean carnival parade in illusion, whichindicates that Anna joins a large family of all the Caribbean ethnic groups andembraces Caribbean multi-culture. Anna’s Caribbean carnival spirit breaks theboundaries of race, gender, and class, and expresses her infinite desire for life freely.
