Social space is an important part of the space in Brown Girl,Brownstones, because Zhao states that“people always have to enter the society and communicatewith the society, and the social communication of different people form a social spaceof a work”(Zhao Yanqiu,2007:426).According to which, the social space in BrownGirl,Brownstones is the black community, where the black race lives. It may be pooror low in social status, but people have good relations with each other and they sharethe same African blood and the same beliefs for life. The black community was ahaven,a healing place for these African Americans who had been belittled in the cruelwhite society. It is also in this social space,Deighton and Selina slowly realize whothey really are in the process of communicating and interacting with others from thecommunity space.
Deighton always liked to go to one of the social space:Fulton Street on Saturdaynights,to relax himself.Being at the Fulton Street gave Deighton a sense of reliefafter he had undergone the loss ethnic identity in the physical space.Fulton Street wasa neighborhood where Barbadian immigrants often went to relax and have fun.Therepressive family space and the cruel, discriminatory working space in white societymade Deighton more and more lost, and only on Saturday nights could he be himself.Unlike Chauncey Street,Fulton Street on Saturday night was broken but beautifulwith its neon signs, movie signs and bright movie windows, yellow lights from carson the street, crying children in the surrounding apartments, the rumble ofunderground trains, the melancholy blues in the bars(Marshall,2009:39).This FultonStreet fascinated Deighton.Deighton excitedly told his wife Silla that his sister hadleft him a piece of land in Barbados, but Silla was full of doubts for she did notbelieve the news was true.Silla’s skeptical attitude instantly dampened Deighton’sgood mood.
2.2 The Awakening of Ethnic Self-awareness:Search for Homeof Historical Memory in Black Homeland
Under the infiltration and restriction of representation of space, spacial practiceis often embodied as the prescribed space behavior, but it does not exclude theviolation of the convention. The two spatial behaviors generate two representationalspaces, respectively:conventional representation of space and challengingrepresentation of space(Lefebvre,1991:50).Some African Americans who live in the racial representation of space have been assimilated in it and their spatial practicestrictly obeys the representation of space, while others realize the fiction and socialconstruction of the racial spatial orders,so they question and challenge it in variousways and strategies in order to reproduce new social relations.Under the tripleoppression of race, gender and class,Avey lives in the conventional representation ofspace constructed by the American ma本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
