3.1 The Reconstruction of Self-Identity:Return to the BlackHomeland of Racial Equality
Body is a spatial existence,and space is also a physical existence.Man is in thesocial space,in which he transforms himself continuously,and at the same time he transforms the social space.On the one hand,the body is held by individuals,on theother hand,it is also inseparable from the influence and control of socialconsciousness.The body is the field of communication between individuals andsociety.The body is the origin of space and the beginning of space oppression isphysical oppression.In order to escape from such space domination,we must firstescape and liberate physically.When the space encircles the individual,the body willresist the reproduction of the oppressive relationship and reconstruct the oppressivespace.It will construct a new space that forms a confrontation mechanism against thereal space.Therefore,in the face of social restrictions and discipline,Deighton chosephysical resistance.In Marshall’s writing,this physical resistance is represented byDeighton’s ultimate suicide by jumping into the sea on the ship to his homelandBarbados.In this way,Deighton reconstructed his racial self-identity in the end andreturned to Barbados:his black homeland in the mental space.
Conclusion
