 Topic confusion in English-Asian discourse

     RON SCOLLON* AND SUZANNE WONG-SCOLLON*

中西方文化差异Abstract:
(1) Most communication between Asians and Westerners  takes place in English.

(2) This  misleads us into believing that little translations work is required for East and West to understand each other.

(3) Nevertheless, when speakers of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese use English , there is a tendency for them to introduce topics in ways which are unexpected from the point of view of English-speaking Westerners.

(4) The Asian inductive, or delayed, introduction of topics  leaves Westerners confused about what the topic is.

(5) Conversely, Westerners  introduce topics early in a conversation.

(6) This deductive pattern  strikes the Asian as abrupt or rude while the Asian pattern tends to feel evasive or ‘inscrutable’ to the Westerner.

(7) Since these patterns of topic introduction  are largely unconscious, conversants are not able to locate the source of their confusion in the discourse structure and so have the tendency to blame their conversants.

(8) Some of the stereotypical attitudes of East and West toward each other  can be shown to be the direct outcome of these unconsciously differing discourse practices in the introduction of topics.

INVITATIONAL DISCOURSE AND CHINESE IDENTITY

LuMing Mao
Department of English, Bachelor Hall, Miami University, Oxford, OH 45056, USA

Abstract: After critiquing the speech act treatment of inviting as either a single or a co-operative speech act (Marked Derived Theme), the paper proposes that Chinese invitation is a type of discourse, which features a tripartite structure and embodies a dual politeness strategy.

By focusing on its organizational pattern and international logic, (Marked Linear Theme, Prepositional phase)the paper argues that such a discourse accords to its participants a cultural identity that attends to both ‘a public posture’ and ‘a private desire’.

Relying on several recorded conversations, and on my first-hand observations, (Marked Isolated Theme) the paper suggests that the ritual play embedded in Chinese invitational discourse makes an important contribution to the shaping of such an identity.

The similarity between Chinese invitational discourse and black adolescents ‘sounding’ indicates(Derived Theme) that the ritual play is pragmatically motivated to satisfy a communicative desire shared by the participants of these two different discourses.

By engaging in an interplay of functional and ritual speech acts in Chinese invitational disclosure,(Marked Linear Theme)its participants come to embrace as well as enhance an identity that is both Chinese and more than Chinese.

Marked Themes and thematic patterns in abstracts, advertisements and administrative documents

Abstract:  Themes, which are known as the departure point of information, are considered an essential device in information arrangement and structuring at both the sentence and textual level. However, the assignment of Themes to the function of organizing information in a text ignores the interplay of cohesion and discourse functions in shaping the thematic patterns of that text.
