Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1.1 Studies Abroad


Language, as a carrier of thought, is the most important communication tool of mankind. In modern society, people express their different needs and opinions in the form of many kinds of utterances on particular occasion. But sometimes they may debate one’s opinion or decline one’s request, invitations, suggestions and so on by saying polite words or impolite words. Refusal is one of familiar utterances that frequently used in daily life. For the speaker and the hearer, it is necessary for them to employ the approprite ways for organising their language directly or indirectlu in the conversation. The aim of employing differernt communicational devices in conversation is not only to avoid misunderstanding in a social interaction but also to reduce harm to the face of other people in conversation.


Austinproposed the theory of speech act in 1960’s, which was developed by Searle in the late 1960’s and 1970’s. Since then many researchers have engaged in various studies with the speech act and got some significant results. In 1985, Beebe & Cummings made a contrast between refusal speech acts conducted in spoken and written languages and used Discourse Completion Test to collect a large number of corpuses, and found that discourse completion method is an effective method of data collection, which set conditions of semantic model analysis and identification of refusal speech acts.


Later on, Beebe, Takahashi & Uliss-Wdtz (1990) made a comparison between the refusal speech acts adopted respectively by Japanese-speaking people and English-speaking people and found that the Americans tend to refuse in more indirect ways while the Japanese would like to use more direct ways of refusing, especially to those with lower social status.
