Testable Hypothesis
South Africa is a relatively labour abundant nation as compared to its major trading partners (mainly high-income nations), thus according to the HOV model we expect it to export goods whose production uses labour intensively, while importing goods whose production uses capital intensively. Basing on these underlying assumptions and using South African data of 1990 and 2000 on trade flows, consumption and production factors we are able to test the following hypothesis about the HOV model:
South Africa’s trade and specialization patterns are determined by its factor endowment.
Is South Africa’s production capital or labour intensive, hence a net exporter/importer of capital/labour intensive goods?
Did trade liberalisation and increased trade pre/post-apartheid lead to structural change in production towards capital-intensive sectors.
To test this hypothesis will employ the Factor content approach and the Commodity Composition Approach. Factor content approach
The factor content approach allows us to know the amount of factors of production (capital, labour) embodied in South Africa’s exports and imports. It states that countries will be net exporters of their relative abundant factors and a net importer of their relative less abundant factor. As a county produces and trade its equilibrium is determined by equilibrium in three markets, mainly factor market, consumption and trade equilibrium.
Where, , is country ’s trade, output and consumption respectively. is a matrix of factor coefficients.is the factor endowments of country and factor market equilibrium requires that the demand for factors be equal to their supply, thus
Consumption Equilibrium
To ensure equilibrium, the assumption of identical and homothetic tastes need to hold, meaning that consumption of each country are proportional to each other and to the world output:
Each country consumes a constant share) of world output. Factor market equilibrium in country with homothetic tastes and global market equilibrium is given by
gives the measured factor content of trade, which contains a total (direct and indirect) coefficients matrix of factor inputs and a 本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
