2.2.2 The bargaining power of buyers
Buyers constitute an important part in an industry. They have the right to lower the prices, bargain for their own benefits, and to compete with other competitors (Neelankavil & Rai, 2009). Through these ways, buyers are influencing the industry they are involved in. In fact, the power of buyers can somewhat reflect how important is their buy power to the industry. Usually, the bigger the buying volumes, the more powerful are the buyers.
As a buyer, Argos always conducts a market survey before it makes the decision to purchase ant products or services.
2.2.3 The bargaining power of suppliers
Compared with buyers, suppliers have the abilities to increase the prices or reduce the quality of the products or services they are providing. And these are their ways to affect the industry they are in. When the industry in which the supplier is conducting is only made up of a few companies, the suppliers tend to be more powerful, which means that they may appear to be the dominant of the industry. Another case is that when the supplier is supplying one kind of product that has little substitutes, the supplier tends to be more powerful. As we can see from previous cases, Argos tries to appeal its products and services to the interests of its potential customers.
2.2.4 The threat of substitute products and services
As each industry is developing intensively and technologies are becoming more and more transparent, substitute products and services for some ones are becoming more and more common. This means that customers have the rights and opportunities to go to another supplier when he or she is faced with a price rise of a product or service. On the one hand, substitute products or services pose a limit of the profitability of a certain industry. On the other hand, it is a great competitive force for incumbent firms. Although there are a lot of substitute products and services of Argos’ ones, Argos has its own comparative advantage by concentrating on its main business.
2.2.5 The intensity of rivalry among competitors in an industry
Competition among an industry is a good indication of the competitive forces. Usually, when the degree of competition in an industry goes up, the profitability of the industry goes down. Besides, when competitor in an industry can have access to improving their position in the market, the rivalry will increase. In online business, Argos is faced with a lot of rivalries. Due to the existing of these rivalries, Argos is keeping struggling for its position in online business, and apparently, it wins success.
