摘要:The relationship between language and culture is very complicated. English teachers should consider the position and the effect of culture- introduction in the English teaching deeply, and then do some relative adjustments in preparing the courses.
uch as, different ways of thinking, the Chinese express their ideas usually indirectly, however, western people express things directly. For example, when a Chinese wants to borrow something,he often gives a lot of reasons before he gets onto the point,while an American just asks for what he needs directly without much mentioning of why he needs it. In China, people In China,people often greet each other with“Where are you going?” “Are you going to work?” or “Have you had your breakfast” etc. The Chinese don't actually take them as questions that require any meaningful response. But the native English speakers may take them as real questions which they find really hard to answer, because they think these questions interfere with their privacy. As a result,they often feel uncomfortable and don't know if they should give the answers. Instead of these questions, native English speakers often talk about the weather when they meet each other.
Chinese people seldom say “Thank you" to their relatives or their good friends,they only use it in some public occasions. If one of his or her friend says “thank you” to them, they may think he or she takes them as strangers and this may make them unhappy. But in English-speaking countries, it’s very common to say “Thank you”,even between husband and wife. When facing the praise, Usually, Chinese and English speakers will have different responses. Chinese people always belittle themselves to show their modesty. But English speakers will take this as a compliment and they will reply “Thank you” with a smile on their faces. When receiving gifts, English people often show their great interest in it. They think it is polite to open the gift in front of the giver and welcome the gift. While Chinese people hold a different opinion on this, because they think it will be considered as kind of “greedy”, if they open the gift at the givers presence. And English people like to use body language to show their feelings, but Chinese people seldom use body languages. English people don’t like to be asked their private questions, which Chinese people think it’s ok, such as, age, marriage, salary and so on.
2.3 The Needs of Modern Society
Modernization is an inevitable historical process in which different nations mix together in the common-shared "global village" out of necessity to exchange the material and spiritual products. Owing to the global village, cross-cultural communication became a necessity to the daily life of every nation. Therefore, overcoming the communicative obstacle rooted in cultural differences is a problem facing all the nations in the world. If an enterprise wants to sell its products in the international market, a thorough understanding of the target culture is necessary besides its strong economy and advanced techniques. In the modern society, the success of an enterprise is not only an economic success but also the success of cross-cultural communication.
Nowadays, China has entered WTO, which means that China may join in non-discriminated trade partnership in the 135 WTO member countries or areas. And China will gain more opportunities of foreign trading. It will be the best interest of China to play an active part in the world economy and to comply with the globalization of world economy. At the same time, China can make full use of the international capital, techniques, management and the potentiality of world market to encourage foreign investmen
