摘要:The relationship between language and culture is very complicated. English teachers should consider the position and the effect of culture- introduction in the English teaching deeply, and then do some relative adjustments in preparing the courses.
knowledge in social communications. For there are several reasons in English teaching, teachers only pay attention to improving students’ four basic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), neglecting to develop students’ cultural sensitivity and appreciation ability.
Students learn English in college is just the same as they learn their mother tongue, if neglecting the differences of cultures sometimes may cause “culture shocks”. So culture-introduction is required in classes, teachers should teach students how to communicate in English in different situations. For example, speaking of the word “cost”, most English teachers would compare the usage of “cost” and “spend”. Besides, students are also required to repeatedly practice these two words in dialogues. It is good for students to make a clear understanding of two verbs in different sentence structures, but if some relative culture were added, a much better effect will be got in intercultural communication. Students should be told that it is a taboo in English- speaking countries to ask prices of goods to their owners ’faces. “I like your green shirt! Where did you get it? How much do you spend on them? Does that cost much? ” Although Chinese think this is no big deal, foreigners will not feel very good, because this is a taboo in their cultural custom. Therefore, if teachers only teach students how to deal with tests and ignore cultural-introduction, students can not master English well.
Ⅳ. Effective Ways of Culture-Introduction
Language and culture cannot be separated. Language background, situation and content are closely related to culture. On the one hand, language can be learned though culture; on the other hand, culture should be introduced by means of language.
4.1 Culture-Introduction through Vocabulary, Grammar and Reading
English teachers could introduce cultures through texts, from each word to the whole article. Meanwhile, culture-introduction also needs techniques.
4.1.1 Culture-Introduction through Vocabulary
Words are the smallest but heavily-loaded culture units, so when teaching new words to students, teachers should look up in a dictionary about the culture meanings. This method will help students acquire its culture knowledge and at the same time rememorize more words. While using the "culture introduction" approach in vocabulary teaching, the author paid more attention to the meaning of the new words. Without knowledge of connotation meanings of the word, readers can not understand the whole meaning of the sentence even they know the every single word. In the western culture, people love animals as pets. A dog plays an important role in their life, and English people usually like personifying the dogs. For example, "a lucky dog" means "a lucky person" and "a sea dog" refers to "an experienced sailor".
Taking the other example of the word "dog": In the sentence "If she chooses your doorway as her place to sleep in the night, it is as morally hard to turn her away as it is a lost dog" (from "Lady Hermits Who Are Down But Not Out" in College Intensive Reading English, Book III), most of the students don't understand the meaning of the sentence unless they know the cultural meaning of the word, “dog”. In the sentence, "Lady Hermits" was compared to "a lost dog&q
