According Yudaeva et al. (2000) it is easy for the domestic firms to imitate the technologies of the foreign-owned firms rather than to reproduce a technology used in what is called 'a potential spin-off' of the Western managerial techniques. Of course this depends on the existing business culture. As there was previously no business culture in the Western sense of the word in India, therefore the foreign-owned firms would serve as an example for domestic firms of how managers should behave.
When they multi brand retailer enter into India they would encounter problems not only with high entry barriers in the form of complicated registration procedures, unreliable supply quality, poor production know-how and primitive financing methods with a supply chain that would be characterized by distrust and lacking professionalism (Tretyak and Sheresheva 2004). Also the Indian management style and customs would be different from Western management practices.
Typically managers were responsible only for fulfilling production plans, and care less about the goods being produced or services being delivered they also lack the initiatives of making their own decisions or offering solutions to problems (Arino et al. 1997). Normally minor decisions are passed up the chain of command or become the responsibility of the senior managers (Fey and Mills 2007).
As the influence of retailers in the market steadily increases and their suppliers' standards become more rigid in terms of price and quality, the small and medium-sized local producers need to comply with the new standards in order to stay in the supply chain. As seen in the emerging markets once the retailers face a severe problems in obtaining supplies of satisfactory quality or quantity agreed upon it has been found that they start the process of their own restructuring in order to provide the inputs in return for guaranteed quantity and quality of supplies. This type of triangular collaboration structure is noticed worldwide among the top retailers like Metro, Campina Wal-Mart etc.
Because modern chain management (both supply chain and quality management) needs significant investment in IT and technology infrastructure, only a few players would be able to remain in the chain in the medium and long term.
The retailers need to work out proper coordination mechanisms including incentives for cooperation with growth opportunities and prompt payment for goods supplied, reputation etc. The long distances combined with bad road infrastructure are the other major challenges.
It is essential for Western companies (retailers, processors etc.) to maintain their original business models (e.g. chain and quality management) when entering into India just like they did in Russia (Roberts 2005),, Brazil, Malaysia as they need to meet their global requirements for food quality and safety as well as delivery terms as per the global quality standards of the retailers with the proper positioning in the cost-efficient - or cost advantageous - market.
(Swinnen et al. 2006).
The business landscape for the retail sector has changed dramatically after the 2006 trade liberalization, with more and more foreign retailers entering the Indian market resulting in increased domestic rivalry. These circumstances have triggered among the domestic retailers a defense mechanism to impro
