摘要:The present survey was conducted in Guangxi University of Finance and Economics(GUFE). It aims at investigating the status quo of culture teaching and learning in CEC andexploring how to integrate Chinese and western cultures in CET to solve the "Chinese cultureaphasia,,among students.
2.2 Language and Culture
2.2.1The Definition of Language
First,language is systematic means that each language contains twosystems,namely a system of sounds and a system of meaning. Second,language is arbitrary,which means that there is no particular relationship between form and content. Third,sincethe primary medium of language is sound,so language is vocal; written forms came muchlater than the spoken forms. Fourth,language is symbolic means that people's idea, concept,value,etc are bound up by convention. Fifth, language is possessed only by human beings,other communication systems of animals or many other life forms are not language. At last,the main and primary fimction of language is communication. People use language tocommunicate with each other to satisfy their need. Culture is a highly complex phenomenon (Kramsch 1998:10). Since the 19也 century, amass of philosophers, sociologists,anthropologists, historians and linguists have been tryingto define the concept of culture. In Primitive Culture (1871), British famous anthropologistEdward B. Taylor first provided a definition of culture, “Culture,or civilization, taken fn itsbroad, ethnographic sense, is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief,art,morals,law, custom,and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member ofsociety,,. The definition view paved the way for the modem understanding of culture. Simplyspeaking, culture, includes material culture and spiritual culture, is a community's way ofsharing thoughts,beliefs,emotions and behaviors and so on.
