All thefreshmen majored in English in HVTC have been learning English for at least six yearsthrough their junior and senior high school, but only few of them have a deepunderstanding of the basic knowledge about English morpheme and intonation andnearly reach the advanced learning stage of English pronunciation. Even for thesestudents, no satisfaction in their pronunciation can be found in the practical teaching.Meanwhile, there are quite amount of students lacking of the basic knowledge ofEnglish pronunciation. They make various mistakes in segmental phonology, even morein suprasegmental phonology. At the same time, they are inclined to replace the Englishpronunciation with Chinese pinyin which are resulted from their lacking of Englishpronunciation knowledge. Their mistakes in pronunciation by negative transfer arebeing solidified gradually and it is really difficult to correct them. Therefore, it is veryimportant and urgent but quite difficult to improve their pronunciation level.Undoubtedly, these students being our candidates, it's a great challenge for all theEnglish teachers in HVTC to take measures to help them overcome the negative transferin pronunciation and to improve their overall pronunciation skills.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Speech Sounds and Phonetics
"Language is a means of communication by which our thoughts and feelings canbe expressed. In any language, speech is primary and oral communication is the mostimportant medium. In the learning of a foreign language, phonetic study is the first andfundamental step in the attempt to master the target language. It is especially so whenthe learning of a second language takes place in the environment of the first language,or the mother tongue." (Zhao Demei, 1995:1)

2.1.1 Speech Sounds
Speech sounds can also be called as pronunciation. “Pronunciation is the soundsthat can be understood for people sent out under the innovation of human brain by thevocal organs and load certain meaning" (Xing Fuyi, 2002:64), Pronunciation is thematerial shell of the language and it is material basis for the language to realize itssocial functions. As a kind of material form, pronunciation is the same as the othersounds of the nature. All of them are kind of physical phenomenon, which is formed bya series of continuous sound waves sent out by the vibration of the objects. The physicalrespect of the language includes pitch, amplitude, length and timbre. Meanwhile, thephysical attribute of pronunciation makes it the intangible and distinguished phoneme,which could be served as the material base for the information transmission and socialcommunication. Pronunciation is made by the human vocal organs, so it hasphysiological attribute too. The physiological respect of pronunciation is closely relatedto the vocal organs, lung and trachea, larynx and vocal cords, swallow, nasal cavity andoral cavity. While making a sound, several vocal organs work together to coordinatethis activity, named articulation. The total characteristics of each language in thearticulation are the foundation of its pronunciation. While studying a foreign language,the vocal organs should be used to the peculiar pronunciation habits of this languageand the learner should master the pronunciation system of the language.
