Biographical data, such as age, gender, nationality, maritalstatus, educational background, difficulties in learning foreign language, plans for futurecareer and so on, belong to objective needs, while learners’ cognitive and affective factorssuch as confidence, attitude, expectation and so on, are all subjective needs. Additionally,he also divided needs into target situation/goal-oriented and learning, or process-orientedand product-oriented needs. Target situation/goal-oriented and product-oriented needs referto the requirements established in the future context of language use, while learning andprocess-oriented needs are the attitude learners have toward the target situation in theprocess of learning. Shu and Hua (2009) classify needs into social needs and learners’needs. Social needs mainly refer to the requirements of our society and employers.Learners’ needs mean the gap between learners’ current language proficiency and theirexpectations.

Conclusion


As a tentative and small-scale research, this study has the following limitations:First, the sample size of subject is not large enough. The questionnaire survey isconducted in two classes of two universities respectively, so we can’t conclude Englishmajor’s needs in Chinese universities. The subjects are all junior students. Therefore, theoutcome can not explain the needs of students in other grades.Second, given the fact that the author lacks social resources, the social needs analysiscan only be conducted via online recruitment advertisements. These analyses are not 100percent in accordance with the true situation, as a number of positions where foreignlanguages are tacitly required, and the position to be filled sometimes does not reallydemand the foreign language skills mentioned (Vandermeeren 2011:167).
