Do theses factors interact witheach other to influence the way they are used?Throughout the study, I will try to tackle the three groups of problems mentioned aboveby a careful analysis of those data collected from natural occurring languages in large-sizedcorpuses, hopefully, the present study is to contribute to the inadequacies in the work ofcomparing DMs across languages, which is also the ultimate goal of the present study.

　　
　　1.3 Significance of the Study研究意义
　　Just as mentioned above, less work is done in comparing the characteristics ofdiscourse markers between English and other languages, the present research, which isdesigned to fill in the gap, is self-evidently valuable. In addition, the present study, which isin line with the requirements of contrastive studies to find out the differences betweendifferent languages and explain the reasons, is also of great significance in the followingaspects:Theoretically speaking, the findings from the investigation of the syntactic positions,semantic meanings as well as the pragmatic functions will provide evidence to the existingtheories and assumptions on DMs which researchers have already got from previous studies,so that they can be properly tested, explained and even modified; What is more, theexploration of those reasons behind similarities and differences between BUT and DAN(SHI)will further prove the rationality of adaptation theory and relevance theory (henceforth RT)in terms of explaining utterance production.In terms of methodology, the employment of corpus-based method to contrast theusage of BUT and DAN(SHI) is both innovative and reliable. Furthermore, theincorporation of the method of sampling in the present study is considered as one of itsmajor characteristics, it is proved that this is quite an effective way in dealing with datacollected from large-szied corpus.As for the practical value of the research, the present research is meaningful since itmay offer insightful ideas on the classification, syntactic position and pragmatic functions ofBUT and DAN(SHI), those information can be quite helpful for teachers who wants to findan effective way to teach the students how these two words are used; for students hoping toacquire the general pattern of using them as a cohesive device; for interpreters who struggleto find a better way to deal with the two words by improving their awareness of their shadesof meaning; even for common people who want to improve their inte-rcommunicative skillsin daily communication.
