congruently worded as verbs andadjectives respectively are metaphorized as entity. It is “grammatical” because theshift from verbs or adjectives to nouns brings about the word-class recategorizationand syntax reorganization. Therefore, for Halliday, nominalization is more a linguisticmechanism.
The third mainstream study of nominalization, the cognitive approach, isrepresented by Langacker (1991). Different from the previous studies onnominalization which treat nominalization as a syntactic transformation (e.g. in theTransformation Generative View), or as a lexicogrammatical property which regardnominalization as the different signifier that produces the same signified (e.g. in theSystemic Funcitonal Grammatical view), Langacker holds a different view aboutnominalization from the perspective of cognitive grammar. He includesnominalization into his discussion because he believes that “nominalization is notonly pervasive but also theoretically significant” (1991: 22). Firstly, he claims that“the question of whether nominalization belongs to the syntax or in the lexicon doesnot even arise in cognitive grammar” (1991:23). This claim shows his radical cognitive attitude to nominalization. Secondly, Langacker believes that a nominalizedform, for instance, explosion, is not semantically equivalent with its original verbform explode (1991: 22). Langacker’s study of nominalization is based on the twonotional orientations; therefore, his study on nominalization is centered ondemonstrating the cognitive property of nominalization and the profiling shiftingprocesses which result in different types of nominalization and the subsequentsemantic difference.

Chapter 2A Review of the Relevant Literature

This chapter will first review the representative studies on Englishnominalization. English nominalization has been studied from different schools oflinguistics, in particular, from the Transformational Generative Grammar and theFunctional Systemic Grammar. It is also approached by cognitive linguists. Therefore, the review in this chapter will cover the studies of nominalization by scholars with theabove theoretical orientations. Then it will present a general review of the essentialsof grammatical metonymy.

2.1 The studies on English Nominalization

2.1.1 The origin of the term
Before going over the studies on English nominalization, it is necessary tomention the origin of the study and the term. A review of the relevant literaturereveals that Jesperson, a Denmark linguist, is the first scholar who notes and gives aprimary account of a phenomenon in English, which is later termed as nominalization.Jesperson (1965: 87-97) makes a comparison between a furiously barking dog with adog barks furiously. He terms the former as junction and the latter nexus. Accordingto him the difference between the two is only a formal one, that is, they share thesame meaning with the latter being a complete sentence while the former not.Jesperson claims that a young girl’s beauty or an old man’s wisdom, are not “things”or “real objects”, these are only other ways of expressing the thought that she isbeautiful and he is wise (p. 135). He believe there is great similarity between thesubstantives formed from adjectives, and verbal substantives, such as coming, arrival, movement, change, existence and so on. Following this opinion, for Jesperson, thereis a meaning equivalency between 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
